Kidz Bop 18 Covers the Hits from Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Justin Bieber
Love pop music but fear the damaging effects it has on our vulnerable, innocent youth? Find yourself feigning a sneeze every time a suggestive lyric explodes out of a speaker? Well, Kidz Bop has been delivering the sonic equivalent of a loving parent cupping a child's ears for a full nine years now -- taking the hits, stripping out the the trash and delivering sanitized versions of "hits sung by kids for kids."
Now in its 18th iteration, the newest Kidz Bop compilation boasts hits from all the usual suspects -- Lady Gaga, Beyonce, Justin Bieber and Adam Lambert -- but with a few key lyrical changes.
In Gaga's 'Telephone,' "eating that grub" stands in for "sippin that bub," while
Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' drops the "gin" and leaves just the "juice." For concerned citizens, the presumed double-entendre "so hot we'll melt your popsicle" was not affected, however.
Despite being intended for children, some question whether the songs that Kidz Bop remakes are indeed suitable for children. Kidz Bop renditions are edited to varying degrees, especially for explicit language, drug references, and suggestive themes, while some references to violence can still be found.
The CDs keep selling though. Nine of the first 10 CDs were gold-certified, meaning they sold over 500,000 copies, and the albums are advertised on the Disney Channel, Cartoon Network and other kid-friendly TV channels.
There has been controversy regarding the album's deluxe edition, which featured the bonus track 'Not Myself Tonight' originally by Christina Aguilera. The songs original lyrics reference alcohol, explicit words, sex, and contains 2 instances of the phrase "F**k you".
A look at Original Vs. Kidz Bop Lyrics:
Lady Gaga's 'Telephone': "Eating that grub" stands in for "sippin that bub."
Black Eyed Peas' 'Boom Boom Pow': "Next level sh*t" is replaced with "next level hit."
Lady Gaga's 'Alejandro': "I'm not your babe" is replaced with "I'm not your girl."
Katy Perry's 'California Gurls': "Gin" has been changed to "Juice."
Christina Aguilera's 'Not Myself Tonight': Replaces "F**k you" with "Boo hoo."
"I'm taking shots" has been replaced by "I'm on the spot."
Ke$ha's 'Tik Tok': Replaces the reference to Jack Daniels with the line "...brush my teeth and then I go and pack." It also replaces "tipsy" with "silly" and "I'mma fight" with "I'm alright."
Kevin Rudolf's 'Let it Rock': "Stuck his middle finger" has been replaced with "raised his hand and waved it."

This is so stupid! Don't they think that kids will get curious enough to watch some of the offical music videos with the songs, like "Alejandro"!? Anyone can use the internet these days, and it's not really that difficult to use Youtube, seriously! :-P

They still have music videos? I haven't seen one in over 20 years. I remember what MTV stood for "Music TeleVision" now it means stupid shows.
Honestly? Half the time kids don't even understand what they're listening to. I spent three years not getting that one particular song was a reference to sex, and I didn't figure it out until I was much older. But whatever. Mollycoddle all you want, they're your kids. But don't presume to think you can tell me how to raise mine.

I don't see where anyone is telling you how to raise your
children. So why the anger? Is it because your children
are already out of control and you don't know who to blame
it on? Oh, and by the way, kids do understand what they hear. They aren't stupid but they do have parents that are.
Great point. I used to sing to "...Baby One More Time" and I had no idea what the song was actually about. I wasn't even curious. I just sang it and didn't even think about the lyrics. Same with "Genie in a Bottle". I never even considered what the words in that song were actually about. However, II am willing to admit that I wasn't so bright as a child that I would have ever taken the time to wonder. Many kids nowdays are more intelligent and curious. They remember lyrics to songs and repeat them word for word, dirty/inappropriate or not. They'll know which words are bad words or which names are that of alcoholic drinks.
kidz bop music sucks!!! i would never let my kids listen to that crap!

Would someone print a list of all the radio stations for Adults that don't censor lyrics? They aren't fooling anyone. These kids download the songs (the real versions) and know what the words really are and have no trouble reciting them.

Mike,
No anger, just stating a fact. So many ignorant people like pretend that they can control other people's actions. When someone makes the sweeping claim that even KidzBop is too mature for kids, in general, to listen to, they're doing just that. For the record? I have no children. I'm not dumb enough to get knocked up in this economy. :) Your last point may be valid, though. I continue to forget the simplicity in music these days.

get knocked up in this economy..........good thing you don't have kids!
what's the point in buying the cd when they can just get the music by the REAL artist instead? I would never want to torture kids with these voiceless moochers.

Censoring pop music for grade schoolers?
This reminds me of the mid-'80s, when the 1982 R-rated movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" was shown for the first time on network television.
It was heavily censored! Some of the censoring was reasonable, others were absurd.
The word "piss" was replaced with "break." Spicoli's exclamation, "Those guys are f*gs!" became,"Those guys are fools!" The scenes in Spicoli's bedroom, the walls tacked with centerfolds, was replaced with scenes of surfers in the ocean on surfboards.
On the other hand, the scene of Stacy (Jennifer Jason Leigh) having an abortion, without her parents knowing, was extended; perhaps to give kids the message (without taking a stand on teens and contraception) not to risk getting pregnant?
