M. Night Shyamalan found himself having to defend his entire body of work to a reporter at a Mexican press conference for his latest film, 'The Last Airbender.'Even though 'Airbender' recently passed the $100 million mark at the US box office (making it his most successful outing in years) the reviews have certainly been horrific and, in many cases, aim to tear down Shyamalan as much as possible. One reviewer sums the director up as "once regarded as the most exciting talent in film, he now sits pretty as the laughing stock of Hollywood."
Now, a reporter tells Shyamalan to his face that he's lost it and is a sell-out.
His answer is particularly uncomfortable. ("I think if I thought like you I'd kill myself. Everything you said is the opposite of my instinct as an artist. The way you just thought, I literally would kill myself.") Also, watch as his right hand man on the panel begins to try a round of clapping that really doesn't take with the audience.

What's to defend? The guy had two good films (Sixth Sense & Unbreakable)in him and that was it. It happens.

I disagree. Those I would definitely consider some of the best he's done and some of his other movies are just "meh" but still enjoyable (like The Village). He makes better movies than a lot of other directors out there and I'm satisfied watching what his unburdened creativity can churn out regardless if it's a box office hit or whatever.
Leila.......you mention "The Village" as watchable? OMG your standards are WAY too low...sorry. i really started to think (1/2 way thru it)that "the village" was a parody of horror movies...really sad...yea he did 2 good movies=bad record
Leila, I respectfully disagree. I found everything after Unbreakable to be unwatchable (pun intended). Sin, I too HATED The Village and guessed the "twist" just from the trailers.

tly what will happen. Is every movie Night makes a hit? Obviously not. But neither is every single movie any other director makes. Night can bring a movie to life and make it twist and
I totally agree. He thinks he is Spielberg or something
Has everybody forgotten Signs? That movie was incredible. I still get creeped out every time I watch it... even though I know exactly what will happen. Is every movie Night makes a hit? Obviously not. But neither is every single movie any other director makes. Night can bring a movie to life and make it twist and turn better than so many other directors. People were so quick to rip him apart for Airbender when they were the same ones praising him for Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Signs.
Also I applaud Jackson for speaking up and defending Night... not just because of being under contract with him but because he honestly believes in his work.
Props to both.

Signs was awesome...One of my favorite movies.
It's about time someone publicaly called him out to his face about this movie. I thought maybe since the concept and basic story existed he couldn't really do too much harm, sadly I was mistaken as were 92% of people who saw this. His only good movie was the 6th sense, Signs was tolerable and everything else he made was pure dribble. A true artist doesn't feel the need to destroy perfectly good work, a true artist finds ways to enhance something good and make it something great.

The reporter was right and what else was the yes man next to him supposed to do, agree with the reporter?

M Night Shyamalan's "The Village" was an excellent film.
"Signs" was excellent along with "The Sixth Sense".
I think he is one of the best.

M. Night is the worst filmmaker of this generation. A one hit wonder, quite frankly. The Sixth Sense was good but every movie since then has sucked monkey balls. People have been on to him for quite awhile now, hence his "sell out" move to direct a kid's movie that he didn't write. He should take whatever profit he gets from this flick and disappear into the night. He certainly wouldn't be missed.

Not his original idea, but he did write the screenplay. He should have stopped writing screenplays for his movies after the 1st three movies. I was a fan through Signs. Saw the Village and gave him the benefit of the doubt. Then came Lady in the Water...terrible! But nothing was worse the The Happening. First of all, putting one of this generations worst actors in the lead was bad enough, but the movie was one of the worst I have ever seen. I finally gave up on Night.
You guys are crazy! Wide Awake was his best movie! And killing performance from Rosie O'Donnell.
That's where Night took a bad turn. Also I give him props for the script with the talking mouse.

Is he gay? I hope so. He's hot.

Not gay, married with 2 or three little girls.
Nobody EVER has to defend themselves to a reporter. A cop, maybe. A Judge, definitely. Reporter - cold day in hell.

An artist creates a work. Failure is part of the creative process. I give him props for not making the same old pictures over and over. Some were better than others. Seems silly to get so overheated about artistic process.

Oh yes...Mexico has produced so many notable films and is such an authority on great talent. LOL The fact is, MOST people don't "get" Shyamalan's films. He's a wonderful storyteller and director and his films are over their heads. STFU Mexico!

Okay I'm confused you all are upset because he took Avatar the Last Airbender and made it REAL, my son who has the collection on DVD, and loved it. Avatar was a cartoon on Nickelodean...Age group 5-13.
