Bucking Trend Among Celebs, Chris Klein Elects to Stay IN Rehab

On screen, he's known for comedic roles, but in real life Chris Klein is taking a serious crack at sobriety following his second DUI arrest in recent years. The 'American Pie' star has decided to extend his stay at a treatment center for alcohol abuse, his rep tells PEOPLE.

"Chris, along with his support team, has decided to extend his treatment. He is doing fantastic and is optimistic about his future. He thanks everyone for their continued support," his rep Jaime Primak said of the actor, who has been at Cirque Lodge in Utah since June 21.

Primak did not say how long Klein intends to stay at the Utah facility.

Klein was arrested on June 16 around 3 a.m. after he was seen driving erratically. His blood alcohol was found to be nearly three times the legal limit, the authorities said.

The actor was charged with two offenses: driving under the influence with a prior conviction and driving with a .08 blood alcohol level or higher and faces a minimum of 4 days in jail if found guilty.

Klein's previous conviction was in 2005 after police clocked him at .20. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to five years probation and a $1,800 fine.

The Illinois native shot to fame in 1999 with breakout performances in 'Election' and 'American Pie.' His other films include 'Rollerball' and 'American Dreamz.' As his film career lagged, Klein became known more for his relationships, which included a broken engagement to Katie Holmes and a two-year courtship with Ginnifer Goodwin.

Wow, three times the legal limit, that takes some practice, and not just a little bit of practice! I hope he's staying in rehab for the right reasons and works out the issues that are causing him to drink. It takes a while to undo all those years of drinking, bad habits are hard to break!
