'Roseanne' Star Sara Gilbert Talks About Sexuality For First Time

Former 'Roseanne' actress Sara Gilbert quietly came out publicly as a lesbian at a press conference during the Television Critics Association conference in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Entertainment Weekly reports. Although she has never discussed her sexuality, it's been widely accepted that she was out of the closet -- as she has two children with TV producer Allison Adler.

One reporter asked Gilbert if she was comfortable being "out" on her new talk show, 'The Talk,' and the actress opened up about her sexuality. "This is a whole new world for me. I'm not an expert on this, or I don't analyze these things," she explained. "I'm just sort of living my life."

"I don't think [being out] will be a problem ... I don't ever really think of things as being out or in ... I just think I am who I am, and when topics come up that are appropriate, I'll talk about them and share when it seems right," she added.

Gilbert and Adler have been together since 2002 and have a son, Levi, 5, and a daughter, Sawyer, who turns 3 in August. Adler gave birth to Levi, while Gilbert gave birth to Sawyer.

"I've been acting my whole life, and I've never really discussed my personal life. This is a talk show, so obviously, I'm going to be discussing my life more, and I felt that the first place I wanted to do it wasn't in a CBS press release. It just seemed impersonal, and I felt like I'd rather come in person and talk to you about all that stuff here," she added.

Gilbert is executive producing and co-hosting 'The Talk,' a 'View'-esque talk show focusing on motherhood and parenting. The other ladies on the panel are Julie Chen, Leah Remini, Holly Robinson Peete, Sharon Osbourne and Marissa Jaret Winokur.

I wonder why people who act as gay/lesbian/trans characters always end up being the character...its like producers have an eye for this.

Namely because it's a little easier to get into the emotional space required for the actress or actor... also because we tend to, in aggregate, be more believable.

That said, trans actresses do not seem to land leading trans roles... instead we take Felicity Huffman and 'uglify her' because of course, all trans women are ugly... *rolls eyes*

Anyway, transjacking aside. I think that's wonderful and that I always did like her.

I knew she was gay early on when her character started developing into early adolescence and teens. It was something more there than her just being a tomboy. That's ok with me because she's a wonderful actress and I don't care whether she's gay or straight. I love the character and wish her all the happiness in the world. It's too bad that we live in a world where this has to be an exclusive news story. She's gay, so what. She's a regular person. Move on.

Jeez! What a relief! I was sooo afraid that she might not find her true self!
