Amidst Outcry, Gisele Bundchen Clarifies Her Breastfeeding Comments

In an interview for the new issue of Harper's Bazaar UK, supermodel and new mom
Gisele Bundchen revealed
strong feelings about breastfeeding. "There should be a worldwide law, in my opinion, that mothers should breastfeed their babies for six months," she told the magazine. Bunchen and husband, Tom Brady, have a seven-month-old son, Benjamin.
Within minutes of the interview leaking, moms everywhere jumped into the conversation--some supporting the supermodel and some completely outraged by her comments.
Playing the whole thing very diplomatically, Bunchen updated
her blog late Monday to further clarify her comments in the magazine.
"My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law," Bundchen wrote. "It comes from my passion and beliefs about children. Becoming a new mom has brought a lot of questions, I feel like I am in a constant search for answers on what might be the best for my child."
The supermodel mom continued, "It's unfortunate that in an interview sometimes things can seem so black and white. I am sure if I would just be sitting talking about my experiences with other mothers, we would just be sharing opinions."
"I understand that everyone has their own experience and opinions and I am not here to judge. I believe that bringing a life into this world is the single most important thing a person can undertake and it can also be the most challenging. I think as mothers we are all just trying our best," she finished.

While I believe that it is probably best that a child gets breast milk at least as a newborn (Studies have shown that it protects them from infections and boosts their immune system) I don't think that they necessarily have to be BREAST FED, woman can use pumps so that their child can get the same benefits without conflicting with the mothers personal preference. I don't understand why people don't understand that your don't have to breast feed to give breast milk. Obviously excluding those situations when women are unable to breast feed.
Good for you Ms Bundchen!... I agree whole heartedly...I believe lack of breastfeeding in this country is contributing to our childhood epidemic of obesity and diabetes and God knows what else...part of the lack of breastfeeding and unfortunately in our country mothers only get 6 lousy weeks off with or with out pay instead of the year off most moms in european countries get..it takes that long for breastfeeding to get a good start!....shame on us!..the other part sometimes is our deep desire for dads to participate in all things childcare and breastfeeding doesnt fit that picture...some "jobs" are just a women's...

Oh really Donna, well I have a 14 year old son that has never has as much as an ear infection and was NOT breast feed, so take I guess you and the bubble head do not know all.
Formula feeding has nothing to do with the obesity epidemic. Most children born from the 20's through the 50's weren't breast or formula fed, they were fed diluted condensed or evaporated milk and these issues did not exist. Breast feeding is in fact a woman's choice but in some cases that choice is removed because of health issues, said issue can be with mother or child.
As for those blaming lack of breastfeeding on working, that is also a choice... as was getting pregnant in the first place. You made those life choices and it is your burden to work it all out and pay for it, not your employers.
Who gives a crap about what Grisle Buttchin has to say anyways!!! Oh, and by the way, I was breastfed until I was 35 and I turned out normal!!
what about those new mothers who's bodies don't produce breast milk, they should be locked in jail?
Telling a woman what to do with her breast is her own business. Also, health reasons on the mothers' side may play a factor in not breast feeding as well as a baby not even taking to the breast at all. It may not always be as simple as just a "choice" not to do it. There are probably thousands of women who would love to but can't.

Very true! I was one of those women unable to breastfeed my son. There are many reasons that a woman does not opt for breastfeeding.
LOL I think it should be a law that you shouldnt date another womans man.She is a moron!!

Of COURSE she's out of line, but it's only an OPINION--not worthy of calling her a moron or telling her to shut up like MW did. Being crude or ignorant only feeds on itself like this: perhaps your brains AND boobs are BOTH useless! See what I mean?
She needs to shut up, 1 baby and she is an expert. Each mother is different, you feed your kid your way, and the rest of us will do the same. She wants everybody to take her advise. Not me.

You aren't supposed to feed a kid "your way". You need to use "scientific method". Read what is the healthiest. Or do you want to feed your kid just apple juice until they die of malnutrition? Yeah, that's what some people do. The kid may be your baby, but it's her/his life and your duty is to do everything to keep it healthy. It doesn't matters what is your "opinion". You need to listen to what scientists are warning you about. If baby food doesn't have sufficient nutrients, or if those synthetic vitamers are ineffective, then you need to listen to their advice. Now if you think scientists are unreliable, then you can also stop taking medication, stop going to hospitals. It's all science that is saving your every possible day until you die from coronary heart disease.
Stop acting so ignorant.
I believe what she is trying to say is that how you feed your baby is your choice. There should never be a law mandating that infants get breastfed. That goes against everything we stand for in this country. If you want to breastfeed and you are able to do so, then God Bless. If you choose not to or not able to does not make you a bad mother. Making sure that your child is fed, and well cared for is what makes a good mother. Scientists are not always right. This is definite. While breastfeeding may be best, formula fed babies can do just as well.
To follow what LotusRainforest says Scientific Method - is ridiculous. Science is not always right ... eggs are good, eggs are bad, eggs are good again...
A mother and the mother only can make the decision that works best for her and her child. no one is denying that breast milk is the best for babies - however formula is not what casues diabetes and obesity. It is our need to have fast meals on the go and we as a country consume garbage. Our food is full of chemicals and hormones and pesticides.
I know many people who breast fed their children for 6 months and longer and the kids have adhd, asthma, autism, overweight and many allergies.
And if scientists were so perfect - we would have a cure for cancer, aids, autism, etc...
My milk never came in so my son would have been dead in six months. But at least he wouldn’t get diabetes or be obese.

So she is doing what celebrities do when they say or write the wrong thing.....attempt to clarified what they mean to say.

Backpedaling hypocrite. If it has nothing to do with the law why did YOU bring the law into it? You said what you said and it's too late to make excuses.

Tsk,tsk...why call names? Breastfeeding is definitely beneficial to both Mom and Baby. I almost didn't get through the first week with my first born. Partly because of the stigma that came with it. Being stared at with dissapproval didn't bother me. Being leered at by weirdos bothered me. Most people were okay with it, but one brother-in-law was "grossed-out" by it. I had a friend that confided that it "AROUSED" her to nurse her kids. Now THAT grossed me out!
Boredsilly, they weren't disapproving of your feeding method, they were disapproving of you doing it in public view. Only desperate perverts want to see your udders, the rest of the world could happily live without them.
