Antoine Dodson Has Arrived (Run and Tell That!)

Crime victim, concerned brother, doo-rag specialist, unintentional rapper. All are dead-on descriptions of one Antoine Dodson, a young man whose impassioned -- some say exploitative -- interview with a Huntsville, Alabama TV crew following a break-in at his apartment has spawned an outpouring of elaborate musical tributes to his, um, talents.

You've got a straight-forward rap version, another with heavy metal flavor, blues and folk, and dozens more. The best and most effective ode comes courtesy of the Gregory Brothers, those genius-y geniuses behind the Auto-Tune the News phenomenon. 'BED INTRUDER SONG!!!' incorporates Dodson's lively and already tuneful interview into an auto-tuned party masterpiece, one that must have T-PAIN wincing in ... jealousy.

Parody of the Auto-Tune Parody

The parody has racked up nearly 5 million views since emerging on YouTube on June 30, a mere two days after a local news station -- WAFF-TV -- filed their now-infamous video report, headlined 'Woman wakes up to find intruder in her bed.' The terrifying details: A man breaks into a woman's home and tries to rape her, but her brother rushes to her aid and runs off the attacker.

"You don't have to confess you did it. We are looking for you. We gonna find you. I'm letting you know now so you can run and tell that homeboy," Antoine said in the report.

The video became an immediate hit on the station's website and was quickly uploaded to YouTube numerous times. Parodies emerged within hours and then two days later the 'BED INTRUDER SONG!!!' was introduced. (There is now a rash of parodies OF the auto-tune parody.)

The same TV station even made a return trip to the Dodson home a few days after the crime, not to follow-up on the break-in or attempted rape, but to see how Antoine was handling his new-found stardom. The station fielded angry calls from locals who said Dodson perpetuated stereotypes about African Americans and should not have been interviewed. Reporter Elizabeth Gentle defended the interview, saying "Some have contacted our newsroom saying that interviews with people like Antoine reflect poorly on the community. To that I say censoring people like Antoine is far worse."

Since stumbling upon media stardom, Dodson has created a blog, joined Facebook and is working with the Gregory Brothers to bring the Auto-Tune track to iTunes as well as make it into a ringtone. He's also got a t-shirt line. "Hey guys, this caught me by surprise as much as it did you ... I just want to thank everyone for their support!" he said on his site.
