Tumor Discovered in Michael Douglas' Throat

Doctors have discovered a tumor in Michael Douglas' throat, PEOPLE reports.

The 'Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps' star, 65, will undergo radiation and chemotherapy for eight weeks. Doctors expect the actor to make a full recovery.

"I am very optimistic," Douglas said in a statement.

No word whether the lump in his throat is benign or malignant, but doctors expect he'll make a full recovery.

The Oscar-winning actor, 65, is married to Welsh actress Catherine Zeta Jones. They have two children, Dylan Michael and Carys Zeta.

He has won three Golden Globes and two Academy Awards, first as producer of 1975's Best Picture, 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and as Best Actor in 1987 for his role in 'Wall Street.' Douglas received the AFI Life Achievement Award in 2009.

Douglas will next be seen onscreen reprising his role as disgraced moneyman Gordon Gekko in the anticipated sequel 'Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps,' due out Sept. 24.

How sad. I pray that he will get cured. Unfortunately, illness is a great equalizer. If you smoke, please try to stop, including Cigars. I remember Michael Douglas was a big Cigar smoker which is no safer than smoking cigarettes as some people might think. I hope they found this soon enough to put him in remission.

Not true. Sometimes the size of a benign tumor can be problematic and must be shrunk (that's what radiation does) to a size where it can be safely excised.

Absolutely! You do not have treatment for a benign tumor. I worked for an oncologist for 8 years and I can tell you from experience that he almost certainly has cancer.

Radiation and chemo does not automatically mean "malignant." Tumors usually grow and cause problems, even non-cancerous ones. Depending where in his throat the tumor is, a non-cancerous growth could crush or block his trachea or esophagus if it's allowed to grow. So please don't read "cancerous" into the fact that he is receiving treatment. Prayers for Michael and all how have tumors.

There is a reason cigarettes are called cancer sticks but many celebs smoke them for years along with other addictions and we are shocked when they are treated for cancer and or heart disease etc.? And before you jump on me even a dear friends mom who was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and my father both had similar sentiments. Please if you smoke...STOP. I wish MD the best and Im sure with his wealth he has the best care money can buy.

Nowhere in the story does it say that he was a smoker. Fact is, while you increase your chance of acquiring certain cancers if you smoke, you'd be shocked at the number of people who have never smoked that have had throat cancer or lung cancer or bladder cancer. Most notable was Dana Reeve, widow of Christopher Reeve; she developed lung cancer and never smoked a single cigarette. You are right, however, to implore people to do their best to stop smoking. And if you don't smoke, please don't start.

You don't have to smoke to get cancer...second hand smoke is even worse. I never smoked but my parents and husband smoked and I got cancer in 2007.

Liz - no, it's not mentioned in this article if he is/was a smoker. But he smoked in the movie "Wall Street". Maybe they make dummy cigarettes for that. Jon Hamm, on the TV series Mad Men, smokes like mad on that show which typifies the 50's/60's. But I hope they aren't real cigarettes. Does anyone know about this? Do actors smoke real cigarettes in their movies?
