Sadie Frost Slashed Arms With Scissors During Marriage to Jude Law
During her high-profile marriage to
Jude Law, British actress Sadie Frost suffered from crippling post-natal depression, which eventually led to the couple's divorce. In her memoir, 'Crazy Days,' due out next month, she details her depression, admitting it got so bad she slashed her arm with a pair of scissors (via UK's
Daily Mail).
Frost met Law while working on the film 'Shopping.' At the time, she was a married 25-year-old mother and he was a 19-year-old unknown.
"I knew that by even entertaining thoughts of Jude, I was jeopardizing an idyllic home life, the most secure relationship I'd ever had. I crushed my unwelcome ideas about Jude, but it wasn't easy," she writes.
Frost later left husband Gary Kemp and bought a house with Law. "The force of the love I felt for Jude and his intense ambition made me feel out of control," she recalls in the book.
In 1996, Frost became pregnant with she and Jude's first child, but Law put his movie career before fatherhood. "Jude was away a lot, while I was sitting on the sofa, getting fatter and gripped by a nagging sense that I was jeopardizing my love," she writes.
On October 6, 1996, the pair welcomed their first child, Rafferty. Although Frost should have been thrilled with her new bundle of joy, she became depressed as Law went back to work and left her all alone.

"Eventually I wanted to press the self-destruct button. One night I arranged a babysitter and went out. I partied all night and got home the next day racked with guilt. I was sitting at my dressing table, not feeling anything -- just numb. I watched my hand slowly pick up a pair of scissors. It was as if I was being sucked down lower into the chair and the scissors seemed to be drawn to my arm," she writes. "I appeared to have cut myself. Blood dripped down my arm. There was no sense of panic within me -- I just felt empty."
Frost had nowhere to turn, admitting her parents -- psychedelic artist David Vaughan, who did work for The Beatles, and actress Mary Davidson -- weren't a big part of her life. "Dad had taken LSD and suffered psychotic episodes for years afterward, eventually ending up in a psychiatric clinic," she writes.
Despite her severe post-natal depression, she was successfully treated. The couple married on September 2, 1997. Life seemed to be going well for the duo, but her depression returned after the birth of the couple's daughter, Iris Tallulah, in October 2000.
"Jude tried to understand, but the more we had to socialize at grand dinner parties in Hollywood, the more I felt my self-esteem slipping away. Soon I admitted defeat and went to see a doctor, who diagnosed PND and put me back on medication. The more I worried about my condition, the more self-obsessed I became and the less attention I gave to Jude. Back in London, we were busy with the children and our careers. Jude was up for lots more roles and I was still feeling low, struggling to hold the relationship together, feeling threatened," she writes. "It was probably a bad idea to get pregnant again, knowing how badly I suffered with PND, but part of me wanted another baby."
Soon after, newspapers reported that Iris allegedly swallowed an ecstasy pill at a children's party at a London club while Law was out of the country filming 'Cold Mountain.'
Their third son, Rudy Indiana Otis, was born September 10, 2002. But her recurrent depression ripped the final seam in the couple's marriage, leading to its eventual demise during a trip to Thailand.
"Jude and I flew to Thailand separately. Right away I knew something was wrong. I knew it was over, the way he looked at me. I was underweight, depressed and scared. We got through the holiday, then we had to go to Los Angeles for a meeting with our joint agency. When we got to our hotel room I could bear it no longer. I asked him if he loved me but he didn't need to reply -- I knew the answer. The moment had arrived and I knew the relationship with the man I loved was over."
Frost and Law
divorced on October 29, 2003. Frost blamed him for her post-natal depression, according to court papers obtained by Reuters. She claimed Law's behavior forced her to seek professional medical treatment three times following the birth of the couple's third child.

The story is about Jude and Sadie not about someone's grammer.

I have to agree. When I see articles that look like they were written by illiterates, it tends to lose a lot of credibility for me. Writers should be able to write with a basic understanding of grammar. It pains me to see people who call themselves writers, using the wrong words, spelling the wrong word. For instance, in the sentence "racked" with guilt, the writer used the word with the wrong meaning. The correct spelling of the word being used was "wracked". I understand people's irritations. Many people are reading these articles. Many people don't know the difference between the right word and the wrong word. These people will think the wrong word is the right word, and illiteracy just keeps perpetuating itself. Honestly, if one is going to call him or herself a write,at least learn grammar.
"She claimed Law's behavior forced her to seek professional medical treatment three times following the birth of the couple's third child." Seriously? Even a layperson knows that PND is not to be blamed on another person. It just is what it is. Maybe Jude's behavior made it harder for her to deal, but you can't blame the whole thing on him, or even half of it! You have to get treatment, and hey Sadie, didn't you keep having children, even knowing the risk of recurrence? If you're going to kepp having children, you need a firm foundation to begin with and a plan in place to deal with the aftermath. Clearly, that was missing here.

Although I feel sad for Sadie, since depression is a desease that can be treated.
However, never think that having another child is going to make everything better.
It won't.
But caring, love and not " Poor Me, pour me another drink/drug " will do.

Jude had been in acting for some years when they met. She fell in love with him while she was a wife and a mother. She fell in love with him because of his wild ambitions. She was depressed after the birth of each additional child. Got lazy and fat. Her career evaporated. Not happy when she had to go to parties with him to advance his career. Of course, it's all Jude's fault because he was working. Had she not thought of self control? Not have any more unwanted children? Support his ambition to be a success? Get off her butt and get on with her own career? What an ideal wife and mother! Just what every man and child needs. It speaks well of Jude to stay with her all those years and put up with her psychotic episodes?

I wonder how Mr Kemp, her first husband feels about her problems. Let's hear what he thinks. Let's hear how the children from her first marriage feel about her leaving them

What does a 25 year-old mother expect when she hooks up with a 19 year-old man? She made the conscious choice to leave her husband and family to take up with a teenager. She deserves whatever she gets.Hasn't she ever heard of birth control? If she knew she experienced crippling bouts of PND,why did she continue to allow herself to get pregnant? We all make our own beds. I guess she can lie in hers now.

For partnerings tthat as supposed to be "pleasing in the eye eyes of God", you "breeders sure can't get a handle on this marrige thing! I think Jude needs to drop that b**ch & date guys! He'll be 100% happier & DEFINITELY more sexually satisfied. Females aren't good but foe ONE thing ~ makin' other humans!! If God had thought about it a little longer, he would have created "Adam & Steve". He would have created a way for men to have kids! Besides, Gay couples stay together A LOT longer than "str8" couples do. "Dun, dun, dun, Another one bites the dust! (LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL)

Do you require your writers to actually know English grammar? What about your editors? I stopped reading at: "Frost became pregnant with she and Jude's first child?"
Whoever wrote that has no business owning a keyboard.

This is really sad...he chose his career over his kids, and her depression obviosly went unnoticed by him, he should have been at home isntead of gallavanting around with other women and making millions on movies..taking care of his wife and kids. so wrong..

Law is a cheater? As I seem to have read, she left her "idyllic home life, the most secure relationship I'd ever had". He may not be perfect, but I bet part of her problem is the guilt she had over leaving her husband for Jude.

I cannot believe the ignorance relayed in these blogs regarding post partum depression. And Jude Law is just a self absorbed pig with a receding hairline.
Ugh. The dyfunctionality in people makes me sick. No one should be allowed to post here unless they have at least half a brain and some semblance of sanity.
As for the AOL writers and their mistakes, they're just that...AOL writes. Not Rhodes scholars.

According to the article, she left her husband for Jude, so she can't play the "cheating husband" card. She also has another choice to make. Did she have post-partum depression or was she depressed because her husband didn't pay enough attention to her? If she had PPD, he could have been the best husband/father in the world and it wouldn't have mattered. Without meds, she would still be sad. So if it was PPD, it was not his fault. If, however, she was depressed because of his behavior, then that's not PPD. She needs to make up her mind. (Or decide which makes a better story and stick to it.....)

The main reason why so many celebrities cheat on their mates is opportunity, opportunity, opportunity!!!
It takes a special person, with a strong character, to say no to all of the temptations that are out there.
Therefore, a person who possesses that strength of character is (as a rule) not going to be self absorbed enough to want to go into the ego-driven world of show business in the first place.
