Marilyn Manson and Evan Rachel Wood Split

The turbulent relationship between Marilyn Manson, 41, and 'True Blood' actress Evan Rachel Wood, 22, has ended.

Manson was spotted in LA Saturday night, dining and clubbing with several girls, one of whom was Playboy model Colleen Shannon. "They just broke off their engagement and he needed a night out with friends," a source tells PEOPLE.

The couple's history has always been rocky -- the goth rocker and Wood, who has starred in films like 'Whatever Works' and 'Across the Universe,' began dating in 2006, split in 2008, got back together, split, became engaged after Manson proposed onstage in Paris in January, and have now called it quits.

In 2007, Wood told the British Elle magazine that Manson is "lovely, really human and just amazing. It may surprise you just how healthy and loving our relationship is."

I have always thought he was gay and these girls were his 'beard' for a little while. No relationship ever works out for him. Usually a tip-off. It's a trick lots of Old Hollywood would do. Get an actress who was between boyfriends and husbands to go around with you for awhile. Make it look legit. I have always thought this of Manson.

You people can make all the fun you want, but Manson is RICH. Freak or no, he did well for himself. I've been a fan of his since I was 11 years old and I'm in my mid-20s now. I still like to pull out his old CDs and listen. People like him are necessary for teenagers who don't fit the "norm." His music helps them express themselves; it's a catalyst. Studies show that music that is violent and angry actually helps DECREASE teenager's anger and rebellion, because the music itself allows them to express those emotions in a healthy manner. But other than that, who seriously cares about stars' romances? It's pathetic, the things that entertain people.
