Wyclef Jean: 'Haiti Has Disqualified Me' for Presidency

The board of elections in Haiti has officially put an end to hip-hop star and activist Wyclef Jean's attempt to launch a presidential campaign in his homeland. Although the singer was born in Haiti and has been actively involved in disaster relief since the nation was devastated by an earthquake in January, authorities ruled that he does not qualify to be on the ballot. No reason was given, but sources believe Jean's longtime residency in the U.S. was behind the decision, as Haiti reportedly requires presidential candidates to live in the country for five consecutive years. Now, the musician has issued a statement about the ruling.
"It is with a heavy heart that I tell you today that the board of elections in Haiti has disqualified me from my run for the presidency of the country. Though I disagree with the ruling, I respectfully accept the committee's final decision, and I urge my supporters to do the same. We must all honor the memories of those we've lost--whether in the earthquake, or at anytime--by responding peacefully and responsibly to this disappointment.
I was inspired to run for president because I know Haiti can become great with the right leadership, and I believe I could be that leader; but, ultimately, we must respect the rule of law in order for our island to become the great nation we all aspire for it to be.
I want to assure my countrymen that I will continue to work for Haiti's renewal; though the board has determined that I am not a resident of Haiti, home is where the heart is--and my heart has and will always be in Haiti. This ruling just tells me that I can't officially seek the office of president. More importantly, there is no one who can tell me to stop my work in Haiti, and there is no one who could. I think of my daughter, Angelina, and it makes me want to redouble my efforts to help give all the children in Haiti better days.
I also want to honor the memory of my father, a minister; I know that he would tell me that even though I've faced a setback, I must continue in all my good-faith efforts to help Haiti turn a corner to a better and brighter future. Do not think that my role in the future of Haiti is over; it's just a different role than I had anticipated it to be.
Rest assured, this isn't the end of my efforts to help improve my beloved country but only marks a new beginning.
Signed, Wyclef Jean"

wow that's a shame...so in Haiti he can't run for presidency cause of his status here in the states(citizen) plus he wasn't living in Haiti for a very long time..know what I was going to say something pertaining to Arnold Schwarznegger but i'll let that one go..
Hang in there Wyclef and he is right they can't take away his right to still help his country out after this horrible disaster of mother nature.

Wyclef is not a US citizen,; he's a permanent US resident. He carries a green card. And it is absolutely not a shame that he is disqualified because he did not meet the requirement. He has permanent US residence - hence the green card! He should have read the rules before running, so what kind of leader would he have made if he doesn't even know (or tries to get around) the laws of the land. I'm glad that Haitian law was respected because Haiti has suffered too long from corruption. His next move should be to give up his US residency (green card), live in Haiti for 5 years, and educate himself on Haiti's laws, history, and politics. Maybe then, he'll have a chance.
I know we men have lots of standards to pick up a woman, and there’s one website that can almost meet all our different demands:
(((( D i a m o n d K i s s i n g . c-0-m )))) my bros told me this; it worked for them, it worked for me; and i’m sure it’s gonna work for u, buddy!! ;)
You should try (((( D i a m o n d K i s s i n g . c-0-m )))) to find something se-xy or bea-uty now!!!
You will love it
oh yeah I meant to say this..I know Haiti will all of a sudden know Wyclef when they need some money for something to help them out. Or maybe the new president, the board who made this decision and other folks..HANDS OUT TO COLLECT...SMDH

This is the best thing that could have happened to Haiti. Some dumb musician won't be able to run their country into the ground.

...and Regan and Arnold are great politians...but not Wyclef. No. Of course not. I wonder why, gringo. I wonder why.
Reagan was a bad actor but a good politician. Arnold is a big joke who needs to just go back to making movies.
hypo-wha? posted this tidbit: "...and Regan and Arnold are great politians...but not Wyclef. No. Of course not. I wonder why, gringo. I wonder why." My reply: I don't know. Never heard of Regan. Reagan, I have heard about. :P As for your implication of racism, go put that race card back into your behind where it belongs. That and it IS possible to NOT think that Wyclef Jean will be a good politican regardless of the political success of both men you mention. Me, I think his heart is in the right place but I don't see how he's qualified to run Haiti at all, and that's ignoring that he hasn't had enough recent residency in Haiti, which is the reason why they did disqualify him. If you feel he might work, fine. But don't yank a race card out of your butt just because someone doesn't think he will. :P
Nelson, please tell me where I mentioned race. I was only stating that if some unqualified individuals are easily considered for politics, then all unqualified idividuals should be. You don't even know what race I am.
Who cares how I spelled the guy's name. You knew who I meant, didn't you? That's all that matters.
Can't we make them keep him anyway? You know, I still think he's an illegal alien.

Wyclef is a permanent resident. He carries a green card meaning that he's LEGALLY in the US. If you're going to insult someone, at least be accurate. Better to be an illegal alien than an ignorant American.
Whats he gonna do you cant fix stupid they need some white people the Asians will make them work.

Wow Connie why are you so mad... poor little Connie your a sad sad pathetic person
It's a shame that they disqualified him, but as he said, rules are rules; laws are laws. It's good that he's taking it with a grain of salt like he is. So many people would have done FAR worse, gotten vindictive etc. Way to go Wyclef-I applaud you for not forgetting your roots, you are truly one of the few great people of this world today, & I'm sure a WONDERFUL father.
