Fantasia Barrino: Overdose Was No Accident

'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino is finally opening up about her recent overdose -- admitting it was no accident. "I didn't have any fight in me. I didn't care about anything. I just wanted out," Barrino tells VH1 in a new 'Behind the Music' interview (via PEOPLE).

Two weeks ago, Barrino was admitted to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville in Charlotte, N.C., after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid, following reports that she was seeing a married man, Antwuan Cook, who she believed was separated from his wife. Barrino is now reportedly facing a lawsuit from the man's wife.

"At that moment, I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with," she admits.

"I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills," she said.

Barrino's manager found her on the floor after exchanging a series of text messages. "Her emotions were extremely low," he said. "She'd been crying all day. Fantasia was just numb. Fantasia texted me, saying 'I love you.' I wrote back, 'I love you more.' Then it hit me."

"I wrote, 'You better not do anything or think about doing anything stupid.' And I left it at that. About 10 minutes later, Fantasia texted me back, and she said, 'Already did.' I went into Fantasia's room and saw her on the floor, and my heart just dropped."

Her manager released a statement on August 10 saying the singer is "not responsible for the deterioration of the Cooks' marriage" and that she will "weather this storm with the dignity and grace that she has exemplified throughout" her life.

Barrino, an eight-time Grammy nominee, was the 2004 winner of 'American Idol.' Her VH1 'Behind the Music' interview airs at 9PM ET/PT Tuesday, the same day her new album, 'Back to Me,' is released.

She must not have really wanted to end it or she never would have told her manager "just did" she wanted him to rush over or call an ambulance and save her. People have the right to what they want to do....until they have children. She is selfish plain and simple. To end it because of a man? Oh please that would be the day. I feel sorry for her daughter. Having her should be enough for her to carry on. She needs to focus on being a good mom forget the rest. Go get some help !!!!!

I love Fantasia, she have feeling just like everyone else. It is something you can help and something you can't. Don't never say what you want do until you get in her shoe, no one can judge her but god. Fantasia came a long way from where she is today for someone to do her the way they did. The man knew he was marry, and he told her that they were not together. The wife is just looking for some easy money, she know her and her was not together. Put yourself in her shoes,and see what will you do. She is a strong black beautiful woman, and she is sick of people doing her wrong. She said she just want to sleep, and forget about everything. People is going to say what ever they want even if they know the reason she did what she did. You all can learn something from her, so STOP judging her for what you heard or read in the paper.

If this is how she TRULY feels and is not just doing it for her show or publicity, then God be with her. Sucide is very serious and not a joking matter. I've never particularly cared for Fantasia's music, but wish her all the best. She also has to remember what this would do to her child and loved ones. I hope she can recover and regain her strength, even when life can seem hopeless and scary. Bless you Fantasia.

What a hypocrite! She did nothing but pump the single mother angle on AI and how her whole life was her child. I guess I must be missing the part where she thought of her child when she was going to kill herself. How sad that the example she sets for her child is that if you can't make your life work with a man there isn't any point to life. Goes to show that blessings are most often wasted on the ignorant. She gives us single moms a really bad name!

Sorry but I see this as an attempt to gain sympathy from the public for her screwing around with a married man with children. If she really wanted to die she would not have let her manager know what she had done. Sorry but she is a fake and I hope the ex wife sues her for everything.

Fantasia suicide is never the answer. Life may be difficult sometimes but you have to always stay positive and weather the storms.

I like Fantasia, I think that she is very talented, and I pray that she is doing well if in fact she did attempt to take her life. However, I like many are skeptical about the timing of this whole ordeal. It is too coincidental that she is about to release a new cd the same month that her personal life falls apart. I am sure that the entertainment business is hard, but I would caution any entertainer to get out of it if you have to seek attention in this manner. The public will not be fooled and your sales will suffer from it.

You were that willing to leave your child without a mother or a father...God Bless that child! You can swallow a million aspirins and it won't kill you. here is what swallowing a ton of aspirins will definitely do...aspirins have caffeine in them.. if you downed a bunch of them your heart would be racing and you'd be extremely jittery.
also...too many aspirins would thin your blood making you vulnerable for bleeding too much but swallowing a bunch of aspirins is not going to make you groggy, for sure ! She apparently isn't too bright.

Aspirin do not have caffeine in them. The only thing she could possibly achieve by taking excessive aspirin is thinning her blood, creating a stomach ulcer, and have ringing in her ears, unless she has kidney disease or gout.
