Fantasia Barrino: Overdose Was No Accident

'American Idol' winner Fantasia Barrino is finally opening up about her recent overdose -- admitting it was no accident. "I didn't have any fight in me. I didn't care about anything. I just wanted out," Barrino tells VH1 in a new 'Behind the Music' interview (via PEOPLE).

Two weeks ago, Barrino was admitted to Carolinas Medical Center-Pineville in Charlotte, N.C., after overdosing on aspirin and a sleep aid, following reports that she was seeing a married man, Antwuan Cook, who she believed was separated from his wife. Barrino is now reportedly facing a lawsuit from the man's wife.

"At that moment, I wanted out. I wanted it to be over with," she admits.

"I just sat in the closet and looked at the mirror and took all the pills in the bottle. I wanted to go to sleep and just be at peace. I knew exactly what I was doing. You can't accidentally take a whole bottle of pills," she said.

Barrino's manager found her on the floor after exchanging a series of text messages. "Her emotions were extremely low," he said. "She'd been crying all day. Fantasia was just numb. Fantasia texted me, saying 'I love you.' I wrote back, 'I love you more.' Then it hit me."

"I wrote, 'You better not do anything or think about doing anything stupid.' And I left it at that. About 10 minutes later, Fantasia texted me back, and she said, 'Already did.' I went into Fantasia's room and saw her on the floor, and my heart just dropped."

Her manager released a statement on August 10 saying the singer is "not responsible for the deterioration of the Cooks' marriage" and that she will "weather this storm with the dignity and grace that she has exemplified throughout" her life.

Barrino, an eight-time Grammy nominee, was the 2004 winner of 'American Idol.' Her VH1 'Behind the Music' interview airs at 9PM ET/PT Tuesday, the same day her new album, 'Back to Me,' is released.

Wrong, to much aspiring can kill you. To much water can kill you.

Go ahead and eat a whole bottle of aspirin and we'll see what happens to you. An acute aspirin overdose CAN indeed be fatal, although only 2% of these cases actually end in death. Also, there is no caffeine in aspirin. However, it is often included as an additive to help it work through your system faster and dilate your blood vessels. Excedrin for example contains aspirin, acetaminophen and a good dose of caffeine.

This is a sad situation. Fantasia should not have attempted suicide, but should take responsibility for her actions, and weather the storm.

I always say if people really wanted to kill themselves, they could. Sorry sister, but I ain't buying that you took aspirin in hopes of killing yourself. Maybe it was a cry for help, or maybe you just wanted sympathy... Dying was obviously not what you intended.

When people feel desperate and overwhelmed, they do stupid stuff. Don't hang out with married men. Make better choices. Put your childs needs first. Be an example of good choices for the childs sake.

Looks like it's well past time for this girl to actually grow up into an adult; full of responsibilities and obligations- and not just to-- herself. Time to- wake up from the fog of AI 'stardom' and actually 'grow a spine'. Hard to believe this lady has a daughter; she's barely an adolescent, herself. Tragic truth about too many generations X'ers these days. They never grew up. Just wonder what Barrino's excuse is.

I guess like most people who consider suicide, she really didn't want to kill herself otherwise she would not have let her manager know what she did.

I agree that her love for her daughter should have prevented her from trying it in the first place. However, everyone is different. Some people just can't see past their own pain to even consider the consequences of their actions or the pain it might cause those close to them.

Whether Fantasia was really trying to kill herself or just trying to get sympathy I think she needs to really get therapy for her daughter. It would be a shame for her little girl to grow up thinking suicide is the cure-all for every problem.

Acetaminophen or datril known also as tylenol has absolutely no aspirin in it. it has no caffeine in it either. acetylsalicylic acid also known as aspirin does have caffeine in it dammit now stop thinking otherwise . It is only fatal in children who use it for a length of time. In adults all they do is remove it with lavage. case closed now bug off.
