Rock (Very) Steady With VH1's 'Greatest Artists of All Time'

If you're going to organize a slew of beloved musical artists, list them in order of "greatness" right up to the very "greatest," it stands to reason that the overall result would evoke a reaction along the lines of..."GREAT!" Or at least contain a few exciting surprises. So how did VH1's creaky, predictable
ranking of the '100 Greatest Artists of All Time,' being counted down in series of specials premiering tomorrow night, end up being such a snooze?
Music fans are having countless issues with the list. For one thing, guess how many men landed in the top 20? Nineteen. (Actually a lot more, if you count all the males in top-ranking bands.) There's just one female in the mix of greats in those top 20 spots.
Not that Madonna (No. 16) is undeserving of praise. But is a Rock History 101 coursepack -- heavily focused on all the usual (aging or deceased) suspects like Hendrix, Presley, U2, Bowie, and led by the five top finalists Zeppelin, the Stones, Michael Jackson, Dylan and the Beatles -- really the most compelling way to wind up the summer with fresh primetime programming?
Based on the list, the show doesn't promise many surprises. But there are a few! Have a look.
- Sade (No. 50) ranked higher than Billy Joel (No. 51), Public Enemy (No. 54), The Doors (No. 65), and Mary J. Blige (No. 80).
- George Michael (No. 87) ranked higher than the Beastie Boys (No. 89), Pearl Jam (No. 93), Mariah Carey (No. 94), and OutKast (No. 95).
- Janis Joplin came in way down at No. 72.
- Eminem is No. 79. (What rhymes with "F***in' 79"? Pretty sure he'll tell us.)
- And when it comes to bands vs. solo artists from those bands, Peter Gabriel (No. 55) ranked higher than Genesis (No. 62), while John Lennon (No. 31) and Paul McCartney (No. 36) ranked lower than the Beatles (who made the Top 5, a grouping that won't be precisely ranked until the broadcast of the show). Meanwhile, Justin Timberlake ranked at No. 66, while N*Sync was mysteriously absent from the list.
Have you seen VH1's 'Greatest Artists'
list? Do you believe it's even possible to select 100 musical artists across different eras and rank them by greatness? PopEater wants your take, so sound off below!

All time but no Diana Ross, Tony Bennett ,Simon & G,beach boys,James Taylor, Carole king,Lionel Ritchie wrote every song in the 70s &80s. They screwed country music with no dolly Parton or Hank Williams. And the order on this with Mariah in the 90s, Elton &BJ not in top 25? should not have cure, radiohead,Alicia keys, timberlake , beyonce, rem, velvet underground etc. You can't have these and miss some of the greatest & top selling artists ever. And Dylan has no business there. Elvis & Stevie w are the ones who created these others. Total joke

Sorry, this list is a joke. I knew why when they said most of the voters weren't even born by the time the Beatles broke up, which might explain why some greats weren't on there, like The Moody Blues, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Santana, Chicago, Eagles, Boston, etc. And, it was by musicians saying who influenced them, so it is going to be different than what public likes. Led Zeppelin would be number one on my list, and The Moody Blues would be in the top 3.

Led Zeppelin ranked in top 10. Liked "Knights In White Satin" is it? When growing up. Not familiar with rock music so well. Forgive me. Hope I had right band. Like song. Led Zeppelin very popular though. Know that much. Never heard of that Velvet whatever band though. Never heard of Cream either. Heard of Queen before, not Cream.
I think Knights song may be Moody Blues. Sorry. Not that great with rock, but have always heard of Led Zeppelin. For a LONG time. Know and respect they are timeless. Forgive me please.
Stones, #4!!! "If You Start Me Up, I'll Never Stop, Never Stop"!!!! Love 'em!!!!!

No offense to the hip-hop industry, but Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake and Beyonce have a very long way to go to be among the likes of Aretha, Elvis and the Beatles. And the worst part of it all was leaving Eric Burden and the Animals off. Innovative, influential, the original white boys with soul, and almost single-handedly responsible for getting our troops in Vietnam through the worst of it with their sanity intact. I know because my late ex who was there at its worst told me so. The best part is that he is still around, I hope Mr. Burden realizes how very much he is loved by our Vietnam vets.

Where in the world is Creedance Clearwater Revival!?

Mariah should be a lot higher than 94. Beyonce should not be above her and Whitney. That's ridiculous.

Who in the world put this list together??????? Beyonce ahead of Mariah Carey? C'mon...Mariah sold 65 million records on the U. S. alone. When will be give this lady her props!!? And Alicia Keys number 100?? They have got to be kidding. What is this list based off ? I really don't know. Explains why I never watched VH1 for their music videos.

Ok... I have only two problems with the list. Justin Timerlake and The Beastie Boys made the list , but Carlos Santana, Paul Simon and The Eagles aren't?! Other than that I thought most of it was pretty spot on.

It's all Subjective not Objective

The list is so ridiculous. You can't include artists who don't write the lyrics, the music or even play an instrument with bands and solo artists who write the music, the lyrics, play instruments and sing. The whole list is absolute nonsense.

I'm sorry but WTF!!!! This list failed to include the great Eric Clapton, the Eagles, Santana and probably a lot of others. With that said, who the hell is Sade??? And, why is Justin Timberlake on there...because he brought sexy back??? BS
