James Franco: I'm Not Gay and Don't Smoke Pot

James Franco is such a tease, but in the October 2010 issue of The Advocate, the 32-year-old actor sets the record straight about his sexuality and whether or not he smokes marijuana.

"Sure, I'd tell you if I was [gay]," he admits. "I guess the reason I wouldn't is because I'd be worried that it would hurt my career. I suppose that's the reason one wouldn't do that, right? But no, that wouldn't be something that would deter me. I'm going to do projects that I want to do."

Although he loves playing a gay man on the big screen, he's only doing it for the challenge and a paycheck. But people's preconceived notions get in the way of reality. "Everyone thinks I'm a stoner, and some people think I'm gay because I've played these gay roles. That's what people think, but it's not true. I don't smoke pot. I'm not gay..." he rattles off.

On why he chooses to portray gay characters: "In this history of cinema, there are so many heterosexual love stories. It's so hammered, so done. It's just not that interesting to me. It's more interesting to me to play roles and relationships that haven't been portrayed as often."

On how nothing would stop him from taking the role in 'Howl': "You want to know what my agents did try to talk me out of? General Hospital. They didn't think me acting in a soap opera was the greatest idea. But they know that I've always wanted to do a movie about the Beats, so no one tried to stop me from playing Allen Ginsberg."

what i dont understand is why with a field full of gays they pick the straights to do a gay role...and they doit ..maybe gays doesn't like other gays they like woman like men...such a rotten field to work

alk Can you understand that gay or straight if they want someone to play a role most of them do so....it is called a paycheck. A roleis a pretend thing and not what someone may be in real life. Since the producers and backers pay the bills why on earth would you think that only a gay person could play a gay role and vice versa????

I'm with you, 'me'. I don't care that he did GH for the experience, I thought it was pretty darn neat that he did it! And he came back-he certainly didn't have to do that...and he'll be back AGAIN! It's kind of neat to see an Academy Award nominee turn up on your soap! It's supposed to happen the other way around..they're supposed to start on soaps and then make it big but he did it in reverse. Franco absolutely had some tacky/cheesy lines on GH...but who cares! GH is a soap! Kids age overnight..people return from the dead...it's a fantasy! I enjoyed him and I can't wait for his return. I'm hoping the rumor of Franco and Jason being brothers is true...that would be an excellent storyline!

A person's sexuality should be a non-issue. I do admire Franco for being brave enough to play gay characters on the screen. He was terrific in "Milk." When will this countgry get over this "GAY" thing?

When they realize that the ONLY way that someone can write (or in some other way) claim that a person is gay doesn't mean that the person making the claim is gay too. (It HAS to - how else would they know?)

Franco is an overrated actor. The other actors on General Hospital make him look bad and they're not that great themselves. He has a stilted, artificial delivery. Maybe he has trouble remembering his lines?

Just because you have a hormone-raging crush on the man doesn't make him gay. (Why do so many gay men--and straight men who feel threatened by the good looks of another man--always raise this question? Seems some people don't feel very good about themselves. By a self-help book and work on that.)

He has been acting since the 80's he has perfected his craft. He was hired on General Hospital to do just what he did. Play a psychopath...I thought he was great, and fit in well with all the outstanding actors and actresses on such a long standing Soap. Besides who are you to judge. Act Much?

I don't have to be an actor to see the obvious. If Franco or any of the cast of General Hospital were truly good actors, they wouldn't still be on the soaps. Franco has failed to make the cut has a leading man and there's a reason for that.
