Revisiting Red Carpet Fashion at the MTV VMAs

There's no way around it, award shows are boring. Hours upon hours of celebrities thanking people you've never heard of, people wearing clothes by designers they can barely pronounce and movies you've never seen racking up awards. And then there's the MTV Video Music Awards...full of can't miss moments, awkward celebrity encounters and enough over-the-top fashion to make your eyes sting.

Who can forget Lil' Kim's unforgettable mermaid-inspired, breast-liberating number from 1999? Or last year when Kanye West tried to pass Hennessey off as an accessory?

The 2010 MTV Video Music Awards air Sunday, September 12th at 9/8 C, but until then join PopEater as we revisit some of our favorite and most despicable looks from the VMAs after the jump!

If Kanye West never grabbed the mic from Taylor Swift during last year's MTV Video Music Awards, the whole show would have been about Lady Gaga, whose impressive five outfit changes during the show left viewers watching her every move. From a feathered neck brace on the red carpet to having to unveil her face from her Alexander McQueen outfit while accepting an award for Best New Artist, Gaga redefined what award shows are all about -- the fashion!

However, years before anyone ever uttered the name Lady Gaga, Lil' Kim was the true queen of over-the-top VMA fashion.

During the 1999 show, Lil' Kim and Mary J. Blige stood along side music icon, Diana Ross, to present the award for Best Hip Hop Video. Little did Lil' Kim know Diana Ross would give her the breast jiggle seen around the world. Needless to say, Diana's appreciation for Kim's ample assets only encouraged her to continue to flaunt them at future VMAs.

There's no question that Kanye West's mic grab could have been prevented if someone was just paying attention to Kanye's red carpet accessory -- and we're not talking about Amber Rose.

Kanye isn't the first artist to pose with a bottle of booze on the red carpet, and he surely won't be the last. No sunglasses or watch can compare to the message that touting a bottle of Hennessy sends.

Booze as an accessory may just fly at the VMAs but after last year's events, stylists should ask their clients to rethink this look.

As her date became seemingly more and more inebriated, model Amber Rose took to the red carpet to flaunt her jaw-dropping curves, all the more so enhanced by her skin tight snakeskin print bodysuit.

Hennessy and a bad attitude may be held responsible for Kanye's antics last year, but Amber Rose's scandalous outfit? Who's to blame for that? Not even a Beyonce-lead public apology could save this duo.

Judging from her VMA style, it seems as if Jennifer Lopez has more head gear than a 12 year-old with an overbite. From cowboy hats to bandanas to head wraps, it seems as if J. Lo's outfit just isn't complete unless she's literally dressed from head to toe.

Much like Madonna, Christina Aguilera has made a career of repackaging and reinventing herself, so it's no surprise that her red carpet look at the VMAs changes drastically every year. She's come a long way from her 'Genie in a Bottle' days transforming from pop princess to Lady Marmalade to glamazon in just a few years.
