Kanye West Toasts Himself at VMAs With New Song, 'Runaway'

Dressed in red and feeling feisty, Kanye West brushed off a smattering of boos in the audience and performed his non-answer to Taylor Swift's song about him at the MTV VMAs on Sunday. He didn't exactly address last year's incident, when he infamously interrupted Swift's acceptance speech to proclaim her video wasn't as good as one by Beyonce. Instead, with the new song 'Runaway,' West targeted himself and his trademark jerk-ish behavior.

"I always find something wrong / You've been putting up with my s**t for too long," he sang, before launching into a chorus that included the lines: "Let's have a toast to the douchebags / Let's have a toast to the a**holes." WATCH:

West took the stage at the end of the night, after Swift performed her own song. That one, 'Still an Innocent,' was actually about West, though it was not an attack on him.

Swift's song is being described as an olive branch to her former nemesis. "Everyone of us has messed up, too ... I hope you remember today is never too late to be brand new."

The 20-year-old's song, which began with a video montage of last year's debacle, came off more like a lecture than a lashing.

"Thirty-two and still growing up now / Who you are is not what you did," she sang both seriously and softly, adding: "You're still an innocent."

Their equally emotional performances seemed to provide resolution to the incident, while overshadowing the show's other moments, including Lady Gaga's eight VMA wins.

Gaga is not all that. Her wardrobe is more talented than she is which doesn't say much because her wardrobe sucks! Kanye West was terrible last night. Sounded like a train wreck. He sucked and so did most of the other acts. The VMA's are now acting like a low budget, B-rated show. It was a disaster! VMA'a need to bring on real talent not side show carnies!

Maybe its just me, But there are no legitimate music superstars anymore. I remember the Beatles, Stones , The Who, Zeppelin, Styx,Eagles, Elton, Heart, etc.....Hell, even Nirvana and Metallica rocked!! Now its nothing more that artificially produced technocrap that is so lame its needs a wheelchair.

I agree. While these "personalities" get famous a lot of real musicians are being ignored. I once thought when watching American Idol that Steven Tyler, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, etc...would've lost. It's more than sad.

I think you are living in the past. This was the VMAs, not Sturgis. Here is an idea: don't watch MTV, but instead, listen to real rock radio with the other members of the lions club.

I loved the show. I am no fan of country music, however, TAYLOR SWIFT'S PERFORMANCE MADE ME CRY!! She is so talented! Also, I was into Bieber's song! Sooooo much better than that miley cyrus!

Listen up, old white men of the world: IT IS A NEW ERA. GET OVER IT! It is 2010, not 1975. Things change and evolve. Just because pop music is different than you remember, doesn't make it bad.

You're absolutely right! And none of those bands needed half naked women or 40 dancers on stage to sell their music either. It was just good music with still memorable songs.

I am not an old, white man and I absolutely agree with you. Something really bothers me about these artists today. Many are so MADE it seems or maybe it's like you said the technocrap. I just miss the real singing, the real music, and the real bands. I don't mean to diss anybody there's a lot of talent and if not talent real charisma on the VMAs and in the music industry now in general. But, I just miss the real music. It's really just what I grew up with. But so many of the audience looking at the awards don't know anything about what I mean. And what you never have it seems you don't miss.

Too true. Nothing but pre-packaged posers with no musical talent. All the techno effects and almost naked "dancers" are just distractions to keep you from seeing that the "star" has nothing to offer.

Maybe all this garbage will lead to a disco revival.

I agree totally! Half naked people using gutter language. This is music? This is entertainment? And I'm not an old white woman either. Kanye West should be ashamed of himself for what he did last year and his actions this year. But there's no gettin' around it, the quality of today's music is just awful, no matter who is putting it out there. And, hey, MTV, why is there no (or little) Michael Jackson music on your tv stations; without Michael there would be NO MTV today.

It's not just you. I think the talent if you want to call it that, is mediocre at best. What these people are selling is a brand not talent. That would explain all the weirdos today. True talent is not vulgar & tasteless. That's what I saw last night.

oh man... i totally agree! me and my boyfriend were just saying that last night... like, what happend to the real music? and MTV hasnt been about music for a long time lol maybe for a few hours in the morning but as soon as i wake up they have dumb shows on their channel... no music. WHERE HAS THE REAL MUSIC GONE?!?

Things do change, but they don't necessarily "evolve." Sometimes, they "devolve." Devo was right -- we are "de-evolving." Last night's MTV Awards was one of the worst things I've ever seen on television -- all "style" (tasteless), no substance. The lighting was so overdone and obnoxious, but I guess they were trying to make up for the wretched "songs." Taylor Swift is cute, but she couldn't carry a tune in an armored car. Kanye West is still an immature, self-absorbed jerk. Lady Gaga is the flavor of the week -- all dressed up and nowhere to go. Where's the musicianship? Where's the substance? If this hollow, shallow, narcissistic crap is "modern culture," I want no part of it.
