Casey Affleck Admits Joaquin Phoenix Documentary Isn't Real

Casey Affleck's much-hyped new documentary, 'I'm Still Here,' which follows a drugged-out, self-imploding
Joaquin Phoenix as he tries to break into hip-hop, isn't real, Affleck admitted in a Thursday
New York Times article.
"I never intended to trick anybody," Affleck, who's married to Phoenix's sister Summer, told the magazine. "The idea of a quote, hoax, unquote, never entered my mind." But, to the rest of the world watching, it appeared to be real. Phoenix played the role on- and off-screen for over two years--including an infamous appearance on the 'Late Show With Dave Letterman' in 2009 when he mumbled his way through the interview, leaving the host bewildered by the actor's behavior.
"It's a terrific performance, it's the performance of his career," Affleck says of Phoenix's two years of role-playing. He acknowledges that Phoenix put his professional life on the line to do this film--which Affleck reveals is modeled after the journalism of Hunter S. Thompson.
But why did they do it? Usually, fake documentaries or mockumentaries give the audience a heads up that it's fiction. But 'I'm Still Here' never does that. Affleck tells the New York Times that he wanted viewers to experience the film's message about the disintegration of celebrity without the distraction of preconceived notions. He acknowledges, "There was no wink."
For his part, Affleck seems to realize the audience and critics might not like what they've created. "The reviews were so angry," he said.
As for the future, the actors are returning to Hollywood. But the question remains: can these two Academy Award-nominated actors be taken seriously anymore?

Point taken, but I suspect that few people believed this bizarre vanity project was real anyway....
I know we women have lots of standards to pick up a man, and there's one website that can almost meet all our different demands:
( B-l-a-c-k-W-h-i-t-e-C-u-p-i-d . c-0-m ) my sisiter told me this; it worked for her, it worked for me; and i'm sure it's gonna work for u, buddy!!

Well THAT sucks...I WAS going to see it today on it's opening in my city. Affleck SHOULD have KEPT the secret a secret. Sort of wastes the whole idea...Kaufman would be dissapointed.

Joe, I don't know about "brilliant" or "gifted", but I do think that should Joaquin go back to Hollywood and give one critically acclaimed performance he will be back. After all, Hollywood loves a moneymaker.
Phoenix's brother, River died from a drug overdose. I don't think you need to do a "Mockumentary" on drug addiction. It's a real problem and both of these men should understand this in the most personal way.

Russell Crowe mentioned that Joaquin had insecurities on the the set of "Gladiator."

My goodness it appears 2 childish men(?) need to grow up! I used to really like Joaquin Phoenix in movies. This antic has made him look pathetic. He may call this piece, “I’m still here,” but after this stunt, we don’t care where he is!

Yes! He didn't turn bad after all, he just pulled a Garth Brooks! Remember when Garth Brooks created an alter ego, Chris something? It's also a lot like The Blair Witch Project. I agree, though, that it would have been better to wait til it was out in theaters. Since people love watching a train wreck, not a fake train wreck, it unlikely many will see this now. Oh, well. At least the charade is over, and fans get their normal, talented actor back. I'm so happy about this, that I choose to ignore the two year trick he played.

Duh, thought everyone knew this already.

This is so stupid. Any with half a brain knew going into the whole thing that it was fake, Casey Affleck broke and gave into the mindless critics and confused reviewers, who were never the target audience in the first place. He should have stuck by it and kept saying "Nope. Nope it's real. Sorry." to anyone who asked. The real audience knew what was going on, and anyone who needed to have it explained to them and have their hand held through it deserve to be left in the dust. Now he's a TMZ hot topic, which is just the sort of thing his film is supposed to be rallying people against.
Take a lesson from Exit Through the Gift Shop, man, next time don't let the cat out of the bag so soon. Have faith in the intelligence of others!

People! Relax! After all this is entertainment let us not forget that fact. People stop letting your feelings get the best of you and thicken your skin! If anyone was really paying attention for the past couple of years, then you should have known it was fiction. In most of his interviews during that time frame Phoenix let it be known that it was his alter ego and he was trying to break into rap. I even got to here one of his performances and I gotta say it was WHACK, in a funny way. I enjoy watching him perform his craft, it's very ENTERTAINING! Peace!
