Airbrushing Controversy Surrounds Gabourey Sidibe Elle Cover
Elle magazine is denying accusations that it digitally lightened the skin of Oscar-nominated actress Gabourey Sidibe, who is appearing on one of the October issue's four celebrity covers.
The controversy is the second magazine swirl Sidibe's name has been tied to in 2010. It was back in February that there was an outcry that the actress, at the time reveling in the Oscar buzz around 'Precious, had been left off of
Vanity Fair's Hollywood cover in what some called 'The White Issue.
The Telegraph reports that the fashion magazine -- which last month featured
Julia Roberts on its front -- is also being criticized for showing slim October cover girls
Megan Fox,
Amanda Seyfried, and Lauren Conrad in full-length poses, while the plus-size Sidibe is only seen from the chest up, according to the paper.
The 'Precious' actress appears on the cover in a draped emerald green gown and rocking long, straight locks, though her glowing skin does seem to be a few shades lighter than normal (See the photos above).
So is the lighter skin a result of her makeup or the lighting used on set? Or did somebody get too eager with the Photoshop?
Elle reportedly claims "nothing out of the ordinary" was done.
"We have four separate covers this month, and Gabby's cover was not retouched any more or less than the others," the 25-year-old magazine said in an official statement.
"We had 25 cover-worthy subjects in our portfolio and we chose Gabby because of who she is.
"We shot this as a story of exuberant young women changing the world. If you take a look at the portfolio, each of the women were shot in different ways and for different reasons."
Hmmm... "more or less than the others"? Sounds fishy.
It's not the first time accusations of skin lightening have been made. In 2008, L'Oréal received complaints that it had allegedly lightened Beyoncé's skin in a Feria ad.

You know I'm right, thats what America should start doing. Send all their gross morbidly obese people to Africa and let the starving women and children eat them. It will lower America's health care costs while feeding all those needy people! A win win situation! Otherwise it's all down hill, especially with your current president who thinks he is some messiah who can fix everything. You know it's bad when the French call him arrogant.
of course she was lightened. Magazines do it to ALL black women including lighter skinned ones such as Beyonce. It's been happening to years because of the whole "lighter is better" issue. Lets talk about that HIDEOUS wig!!

Truth be told...I think that pic is the best she can be...airbrush or not.

I'm REALLY tired of everybody pretending this woman isn't disgusting.

Hell yeah, it was airburshed. Not trying to be mean but we all know that Gabby is not a light skinned black woman. She is black and that's that.

Every woman and man who appears on the covers of these pathetic publications has been reduced or air brushed. One even made Gosselin look a thousand times different, an achievment indeed! Gabby is a large lady but shines inside. She does not need this publicity to prove her value.

I mean no disrespect, but lets be honest. This young lady is not only morbidly obese, but she not attractive in any way. This picture of her is not beautiful it is awful. I do think the editors could have could picked out a better photo.

As a photographer myself, I think Gabourey Sidibe looks stunning. Her smile is sweet, her eyes show personality and the emerald green is rich and appealing. I have seen many magazine covers with so called 'skinny girls' that I don't spend near as much time observing at as I have this cover.

what a load of crap, elle: putting gibroney shadooby on the cover of your stinking mag is a paltry attempt to rise above the cheapness of your worthless publication that has preyed upon appearance since your ill-advised founding...every issue is an abomination and an attack on the "average" girl's sense of self, and to that extent you do far more damage than mags like Playboy.

She is a beautiful creation of God. We should be so blessed to have Ms. Gabourey Sidibe's beauty both in and out. What a personality. Congrats to you for making the cover of "Elle".

This woman is fat and ugly...And it's NOT because she is black...She's just plug-plain FAT and UGLY regardless of her race or ethnicity...And she needs to loose some of that fat before she has a heart attack!!!

EXACTLY....It is a by-product of a society in denial and suffering from some form of racially imposed guilt...A guilt of reverse-racism. We are not supposed to say anything that may be construed as potentially "offensive" where black people are concerned...Only THEY are allowed to "call a spade a spade" (no pun intended) and make fun of non-blacks...
