It's been over a year since Joaquin Phoenix appeared on 'The Late Show with David Letterman' sporting an unkempt beard and sunglasses and mumbling his way through an awkward, often-uncomfortable interview with the late-night host. And on Wednesday, a clean-shaven Phoenix returned to the show and apologized. It turns out it was all an act--he was playing a character for his friend Casey Affleck's faux documentary 'I'm Still Here.' Affleck revealed last week that the movie, and Phoenix's character, was fake.
"I mean, I think that you've interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person," the actor said to the late-night host. "I hope I didn't offend you in any way."
"Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no," Letterman said. "I'm telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger. I was looking for a beat down, and I got one... I want to thank you for that."

I recall the odd interview, I was told by a clinical specialist that Mr. Phoenix was showing typical signs and symptoms of Disociative Identity Disorder, something to do with a program called MK Ultra.

Fake..right...the man was probably for real but now realizes his career in the crapper and has to try and to do something to get it back....and even if it was a hoax..how rediculous!

i totally agree. i think it was real. cause i think he is a huge weirdo & did all that & NOW regrets it & is gonna pull this crap. probably paid casey to go along with him & help him try to salvage a career. what a tool.
Pretty sad when you have to pull a stunt like that....Letterman knew all along what Joaquin was doing! But letterman who should have been fired for his antics with Female Employees continues to delve into the Abyss of late night television.
When Johnny Carson retired...there went the last of the great late night hosts! So what you get now is crap like Joaquin and Dave? Jeez Dave thanks! Must have thought that one up while you fondled a female staffer huh?

I hate to break it to you but Johnny Carson did way worse things with female members of his staff. Carson also cheated on all of his 4 wives. Don't get me wrong, I love Carson. But don't make him out to be a saint and don't make Letterman out to be some kind of egregious sinner.
It will be hard to believe anything from Joaqiun now, once a liar, always a liar. He must be low on cash now, and needs his acting jobs back.
Acting is for the stage, or a screen, not to try to fool the world. Thats called being a con, plain and simple.
And now hes smiling about it all?

Sort of makes me think of Bobby on Dallas. When all exits are blocked, make it a dream (or act.)

Wow, so much hate on these boards over nothing. You all act like he killed a litter of puppies or something. He gave a strange interview. That's all. Chill out hateful people. Go say something nice about someone. Oh wait, that might throw your bodies into shock.

I guess they needed another Farrah Fawcett publicity stunt. No one will ever know, unless he stays straight with his fans from now on.

Thank goodness Joaquin didn't lose his mind. He looks 100% better, clean and shaven. Only in Hollywood!

Well he has a movie to promote so you do what you have to do. Good luck - I know I won't be seeing it.

I thought it was absolutely hilarious! I mean, admit it, society tends to expect so much from celebrities, that; by chance, if they show signs of going off the deep end, a good number of us freak out and begin to ponder, question, or try to analyze why this has happened. I would say that this was an experiment in psychology, with Joaquin and Casey testing us out to see just how for we would go in following or believing the whole act. Personally, I got a kick out of it and will admit that I was fooled into believing what had happened to him. And, I'm actually relieved to see him back out there and; hopefully, getting back to acting sometime in the future!
