Stephen Colbert Yucks It Up, Then Breaks Character at Congressional Hearing

Stephen Colbert took his material to Washington to testify before Congress on Friday over immigration, using real jokes for a real problem facing America today.

The Comedy Central political satirist didn't break character during his opening testimony, in which he testified for the United Farm Workers (UFW) before the House Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee in an effort to provide immigrants a voice in their fight to keep their jobs and homes.

Colbert did get serious later when Congressman Judy Chu of California asked why he wanted to get involved in the immigration debate.

"I like talking about people who don't have any power," Colbert explained. "I feel the need to speak for those who can't speak for themselves. We ask them to come and work, and then we ask them to leave again. They suffer, and have no rights."

Then, surprisingly, Colbert quoted the Bible from Matthew 25:40: "The King will reply, 'I tell you the truth. Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.'"

In August, Colbert talked about spending a day at a corn and vegetable farm in New York after President of UFW Arturo Rodriqguez appeared on the show to talk about immigration.

If you think Stephen Colbert was a bozo in these hallowed halls, are you forgetting what happened when Newt Gingrinch was in charge of Congress? He and the GOP invited Chris Farley to do his Newt impersonation (Farley looked drunk doing this, by the way). Colbert is stealth-smart and has more than a few points to make. And if you don't believe that, just watch his toe-to-toe with Bill O'Reilly on Fox News.
