No More Fat Jokes for Slimmed-Down Ricky Gervais

Funnyman Ricky Gervais lost a bunch of weight, putting fat jokes off-limits.

"Now I've got to stop making jokes about fat people, which is annoying. When I was fat, it was okay," the creator of 'The Office' tells PEOPLE.

Gervais, 49, lost "20 or 22 pounds," he says. "It wasn't so much about the weight. It was more that I was a fat, lazy, out of shape slob, to be honest."

The star's partner of more than 25 years, Jane Fallon, also 49, tells PEOPLE she's lost nearly as much weight, estimating 18 pounds. "I tend to run about three or four miles and he does the same," says Fallon.

"I stick to the paths," Gervais says of his jogs. "I didn't eat differently. I probably just stopped having that second meal at 11:30 at night."

Fallon, an English producer and novelist, says she cooked healthier versions of "big fat things" the couple tended to eat. "He didn't realize that I was probably feeding him less calories at the same time he was running," she says.

Gervais guest-starred on several episodes of Louis CK's television comedy 'Louie' this summer. Larry David told PopEater in May he was hoping to bring Gervais in for the next season of 'Curb Your Enthusiasm.'

His "partner"? As in, they write together? Make TV/film projects together? Operate an architecture firm together?

Oh ... you mean "SPOUSE." It's a perfectly good term, and a far better choice of word when partner already has a use in reference to business and creative collaborations.

Either way...love, love, love Ricky Gervais. Incredibly talented guy. They look terrific and the fact that they are healthier is an even bigger plus. :)

Good for him, I recently lost nearly 40 pounds by changing my eating habits, no sugar and no salt, no fast food and co frozen ready meals ... it can be done with a bit of will power and as soon as the pounds start dropping off, it gets easier.

He looks better; of course, one generally does with weight loss if you have to. His partner of 25 years - I take that as long term girlfriend because she cooks for him and they are holding hands. That is too long to be with someone without marriage and/or children. However, if that's what they both want, then good for them finding each other and it lasting so long.

Regarding the first sentence of the article: Why is it that fat jokes aren't just off limits on general principles? Why is it okay to make a joke at someone else's expense that the teller KNOWS hurts their feelings? Why is that funny to people? Sick, sick, sick...
