No More 'Dilemma': Universal to Pull 'Gay' Trailer

After pointed criticism from CNN host Anderson Cooper beget a flood of negative headlines, Universal Studios has told the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) that they are pulling a controversial trailer for the film 'The Dilemma' that uses the word "gay" in a derogatory way.

GLAAD expressed concerns about the trailer prior to its release to YouTube and theaters, however, the studio chose to keep the line in the preview. But now that the joke has ignited an unexpected backlash, the studio "assured us that the offensive joke will be removed from TV and media campaigns promoting the film from this point forward, including the trailer currently playing in movie theaters," according to post on GLAAD's blog.

In the preview, Vince Vaughn's character uses the word "gay" to describe electric cars. "I mean, not homosexual gay," he corrects. "But my-parents-are-chaperoning-the-dance 'gay.'"

Criticism from the likes of Cooper, who called the word's use "unacceptable," reportedly caught Universal off guard. A studio insider told Deadline Hollywood that they "showed the trailer to gay groups like GLAAD and gay executives here and gays in our marketing department and no one was offended and everyone had a positive response."

But GLAAD spokesman Richard Ferraro told PopEater on Friday that claim was "inaccurate" and that "GLAAD does not and did not support this trailer."

'The Dilemma,' directed by Ron Howard and co-starring Kevin James and Queen Latifah, is set to hit theaters on Jan. 14.

Why does using the word "gay" get people all in a tizzy but yet no one even blinks an eye when God's name is taken in vain? Personally, I would never say something is "gay" to indicate that it lame or stupid, because I understand why it would be offensive to some. What I don't undersand is why the same consideration is not taken for those of us who might find offense in using God to express that they are frustrated or angry. His last name is NOT damn.

I've heard Anderson Cooper himself use some highly controversial terms that people could find offensive, so why is he making such a big deal out of this? Because it is personal for him? It should be a two way street.. Why should anyone take him seriously when he is showing such strong trends towards hypocracy? He is not the only person that does this, many people think we should walk on eggshells for them but don't consider other peoples feelings at all.

I am so tired of Gays picking on us heterosexuals. We have to watch what we say. They can use the word "straight" in derogatory ways all the time. I think we should start making them have to live by the same code they want us to live by.

Anderson Cooper is ridiculous. I am gay and saw the trailer. That was the only funny line in the trailer and I laughed when I heard it. I didn't take offense.

Honestly, I think people just need to mind THEIR own business. Unless it's a life or death situation the no one needs to get involved. Just leave people alone. That is what is wrong with the world now, everyone wanting to stick their nose in other peoples business and not pay attention to themselves for once. By the way, I DO NOT believe in being gay. There are many words you don't "throw around" nowadays. We've gotten past most racial slurs and nasty remarks about women, etc. The only group it's still okay for retards to pick on is gays. Many of the guys who slur gays are probably gay themselves and as we've seen so many times, the ones who are the loudest against gays, are often hiding something.

To all those who don't see how that could be offensive to people, do this little exercise -- imagine the exact same situation, now say the exact line only replace the word 'gay' with 'jewish' or 'black' or 'mexican' or whatever.

Now do you understand? The offensiveness is clear when you sub in the other words and I bet most of you would never dream of saying that because you realize how offensive and wrong it is. It is because it has nothing to do with the group at all but is used as an insult/putdown/dismissive word.
