They say it's his birthday, to paraphrase an old pop song. It's not easy to fathom, but John Lennon, who was born in Liverpool, England, on Oct. 9, 1940, would be 70 years old today.
To celebrate the milestone, a new monument was unveiled in Liverpool today to honor the singer-songwriter.
"We come here with our hearts to honor Dad and to pray for peace and say 'thank you' to each and every one of you," said Julian Lennon, 47. He attended with his 71-year-old mum (Lennon's first wife), Cynthia Lennon, who first met John Lennon at Liverpool Art College.
"Don't be morbid, enjoy the joy that he had, and what we all have from his music," she told the hometown crowd.
Fans across the globe are remembering the Beatles co-founder, who was fatally shot outside his New York City apartment building by a deranged stranger in 1980, shortly after turning 40.
Yoko Ono has asked YouTube viewers to post their own tributes, which you can watch here. PBS has produced the new documentary 'LENNONNYC' about the musician's final years, and all Lennon's solo albums have been remastered and re-released for the occasion. Today, a time capsule in Lennon's honor was dedicated at Cleveland's Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame, to capture the Brit's wide-ranging influence on pop culture.

it's not he is 70..it's he would have been 70...He was an awesome songwriter..luv the Beatles
I recall John once saying in an interview that he'd hate to be old.
His exact quote was "Who wants to hear an 80-year-old Beatle ?"
Keeping that in mind,I've no doubt he happy where he is now,and doing just fine.
Bet he and George are having an impromptu jam session right now as I write this post.

you either read the quote wrong, or more likely he was misquoted in whatever publication it was in.
what he said was he wasn't going to be an 80 yo beatle singing she loves you publically.
he said also in an interview, he hoped to be in his 80's with yoko looking thru their scrapbook of madness.
Happy Birthday, Sean -- 35 today. My son, Mark turned 36 on the 28th of September. His due date was October 9th.
John Lennon: Imagine. One of my top 10 favourite songs ever. I do try to imagine what you would have done since 1980. For sure, it would have been novel, interesting and fascinating.
To Julian and Sean: I understand what it is like to lose a beloved father at a tender age. That is my sad experience (I was 16) as it is yours. But a father is so special that the place in our hearts where they live is a special treasure chest, filled with the jewels of our memories. Nothing can take that from us.

John was a truly unique individual with an enormous amount of talent. He was simply a musical genius and will be remembered as perhaps the most influential artist of the twentieth century.

John Lennon did write great music but was drugged up and
lost in his peaceful pretend world. I think of the song Imagine
then think of what a lousy father he was. Lets be REAL.

He'd probably agree with you, because there would be no point in arguing about it. John Lennon was a good man, but he had his flaws. No one is perfect, and he knew he wasn't perfect. That is one of the many reasons people find him admirable. He was an amazing individual, but still human like the rest of us.
Lets be REAL, All the big band"s still do or have did drug"s in there day, And there"s alot of lay man that are bad dad"s also.

To Julian Lennon, your father was a tribute and icon in my opinion to world people, he didn't die in vain! His legend will keep on going on! "IMAGINE AND INSTANT KARMA" will forever be remembered as will your father and loved one, John Lennon. Until today, I still love his work and remember the pain I did endure on the tragic day of his murder! Today, I do, like I am sure, most others will too, CELEBRATE THE LIFE OF JOHN LENNON! Thank you John for your living legacy, your children, loved ones, and forever, your musical talent and humanitarian way! PEACE IN HEAVEN AND A VERY HAPPY 70TH BIRTHDAY JOHN LENNON!
