Amber Portwood, the fiery and sometimes violent star of 'Teen Mom,' broke down during a reunion episode Tuesday night after Dr. Drew Pinsky confronted her about the abuse she inflicted -- on camera -- on her former fiance, Gary Shirley. Now, there are reports that she is being investigated for domestic violence by police in Anderson, Ind., and the state Department of Child Services, and could face felony charges for punching Shirley in front of their daughter, Leah.
In Indiana and other states, domestic violence in front of a child under the age of 14 can result in felony charges, Caryn Burton, training director at the Coalition Against Domestic Violence, told HollywoodLife.com. There has also been some talk about whether the MTV camera crew's decision to not intervene in the attacks could merit misdemeanor charges, as it is similarly against Indiana state law to not report witnessed domestic or child abuse.
The story was addressed in-depth this morning on the 'Today' show.
According to Life & Style, whose headline this week refers to Amber as an "Out-of-Control MONSTER," Portwood has become something of a pariah in her hometown since her violent behavior aired on a Sept. 28 episode of 'Teen Mom.' In an editorial entitled "Reality TV Giving Wrong Impression of Anderson" in a local newspaper, The Herald Bulletin, an Anderson-based reporter had a lot to say about Amber's behavior.
"She kicked and punched him seven times before kicking him in the back as he walked down a flight of stairs ... Reality shows prey on featuring people who appear to be undereducated, narcissistic and full of anger," the piece reads. "'Teen Mom' is not the national image Anderson wants. We don't push our loved ones down stairs. We don't take pride that our teenage girls are 16 and pregnant. We don't all drop out of high school."
At the time, MTV told the Herald Bulletin: "Our role in 'Teen Mom' is to document how incredibly challenging and difficult being a teen parent is. In this particular instance, we monitored the situation to make sure no one was in imminent danger and that the child was not there."
However, the child, Leah, was present during at least one of several different altercations between Amber and Gary, and according to HollywoodLife.com, "Failure to report child abuse/neglect is a crime ... Indiana law requires any person who has reason to believe that a child is a victim of abuse or neglect to make an immediate oral report to DCS or to law enforcement."
When confronted about the situation by Pinsky, Amber broke down in tears and claimed to have "blacked out" during the incident, saying she only remembers striking Gary once. For his part, a source close to Gary told RadarOnline that he believes Amber is a "great mother."

This type of behavior (violence) is usually a learned behavior. I would bet that this girl was physically abused in childhood (spanking counts, especially if it's done in anger and frustration) by her parent. This is how she learned to deal with frustration and stress, and if she's hitting him, she'll likely hit her daughter too at some point. Some psychotherapy and anger management is in order for her, and for anyone else with the same tendencies. Hitting is not ok, no matter who is doing the hitting or who is being hit (and that does include spanking). Violence only begets more violence.
I agree with ^ Shes unfit for her child, EVERYTIME the show is on shes got the kid in the crib and shes laying in bed, Gary is somewhat of an idiot at times but he is by FAR a much better parent for Leah than Amber is.
I agree, butros. Amber was trying to play the victim on the reunion show. All she cares about is herself. She does not take care of Leah, she does not clean her house....all she does is beat the crap out of Gary, yell at Leah, and look for her next boyfriend. She found that pretty quick! A convict! She did not even ask him what his crime was when he told her! Instead Amber talked to him about him meeting Leah! Amber then promptly allowed her new boyfriend to stay with her and Leah. This convict-guy was seen changing Leah's diaper...I do not blame Gary for getting upset about that! Who even knows what this guy's crime is?! He was also seen cleaning the house while a lazy Amber sat on the sofa. I think she is on some kind of illegal drugs. She lost 65 lbs. in a very short amount of time. I recently read that whenever Amber & Gary broke up, she quickly started seeing other guys. She even told Gary that while they were still together, she had a guy over. Amber said the guy sneaked out through a window when Gary got home. How could she allow a carousel of men to be near her little girl? Amber needs to pay for her physical & emotional abuse of Gary, her lack of parenting/mothering, her irresponsibility where her child's welfare is concerned (she puts her needs above Leah's protection), and the strong likelihood that she is on drugs. I pray that Gary gets full custody of Leah and that he DOES NOT reunite with Amber...ever!
This girl is out of control. She is abusing this guy. She looks like a big bully. That child should be taken away and given to the dad and he should stay the hell away from her. She doesn't deserve either of them. She doesn't remember? Which time? That's what they call "selective amnesia"!
Not condoning anything this psycho does, but blacking out is real. Its happened to me many times, you just get sooo angry, the next second you lost a couple minutes and have no idea what happened. Its actually a really scary experience... If she doesn't mean to do it, she needs to make the effort to get help so that it can stop, because it won't go away on its own...
Most definitly,,,its abuse!,,,Abuser always have selective memory. She needs major help....and Gary.. does too....He keeps making excuses for her,,,just like an abused woman would do!! Some of her trouble is ...from being in front of a camera,,,showing off,,,! And yes,,MTV should have stepped in,,,This is not what this show started out to be,,!
So what happens if she "blacks out" when she's angry at the child? If she hit a child that hard seven times and kicks her in the back as she's going down the stairs, that child would in all likelihood be dead. Would the "blackout" excuse work then?
This is in reply to Misty.. She did say she "blacked out " I think she also said she Whited out"? (I don't know what that means) but when the doctor said he was worried about what she might do to Leah, Amber replied that she knows what she is going to do before she does it. How can you black out something you premeditate?
My daughter is 18 with no children, just to say and I watch this all the time with her. Yes, this girl is out of control with major anger issues, probably stemming from her upbringing. The child needs to be placed in the custody of her father, he is a much better parent, more tolerant and loving to his daughter!! He may not keep a very well kept house, but he gets up every day and goes to work to support his daughter and you can see his love and patience for his little girl!
i agree, she does not seem fit to be a mother. i dont think anyone has the right to hit anyone else. No one should have to stand there and get straight punched in the face. Yes retaliation would have been just, but in our society there is a double standard. I say if a woman has the balls to hit a man, she better expect to get hit back, b/c one day that will happen. thats why he is best staying away from her b/c one day he might snap and then he will be wrong. This girl will likely abuse her child as some point if she doesnt get help. My son is two and as a mother you know those are some trying years, what will she do then.
She needs help badly! I hope they take Leah away from her and give FULL custody to Gary. She is one out of control mom. Lacey doesn't whack Ryan around, Caitlyn doesn't throw fits of violence either.
This girl is out-of-control, needs anger management (IN A BIG WAY!), and should have her daughter taken away from her - ABSOLUTELY! No person, child, woman or man should have to endure the crap she dishes out. It really just goes to show how immature she really is.
She's a filthy PIG! Gary should have full custody of their daughter! She's already blowing some other guy! She's a straight up skank who doesn't deserve the attention she gets on tv!
Ever watch Jerry Springer? This is what anyone watching that show thinks American society is supposed to act as an adult- discontinue all of this crap on TV- that child needs to be away from the mother- and help the father with childcare while he is in school or works- exposure to crap TV is abusive.
Usually a woman that demonstrates that kind of violent behaviour, disregarding any others present (in this case a camera crew and/or her child), is mentally unstable and incapable of caring for a child. Definitely she should not have custody of the child. I am surprised she can even have unsupervised visitation!
Remember children learn from what they SEE from their parents. Children are NOT born being abusers..They learn from their parents and not all grow up repeating their families behaviors. They need to get the little girl out of her mother's home, live with her dad and her mom needs help
