Denise Richards: 'All I Can Do Is Move Forward and Keep My Girls Protected'

Denise Richards had a "fun-filled weekend" with her daughters and their father, Charlie Sheen, the star's ex-husband. They took in 'Mary Poppins' on Broadway, did some shopping together and bonus, they were all staying at the ever-so-scenic Plaza Hotel! Then in the wee hours of Tuesday, you-know-who allegedly went berserk on a you-know-what in a hotel room while high on you-know-woh! Denise, who accompanied her ex to the hospital, hasn't missed a beat and continued her promotional tour for Spike TV's 'Blue Mountain State.'

While she's reluctant to dish details on the still-hazy fracas, Denise opened up to PopEater on Wednesday in a Web Exclusive about how she's handling the touchy and downright surreal situation with Sheen's darling daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.

"The girls think they had a fantastic trip in New York with mommy and daddy," she tells me. Watch our interview after the jump!

Sheen's unraveling on Tuesday hasn't fazed Denise, not in the least. She has one singular goal: protect her kids. "It is what it is," she says of the scandal. "I can't change what happened. All I can do is move forward and keep my girls protected from the situation and that's what I'm doing."

According to Denise, Sam and Lola "think they had a fantastic trip in New York with mommy and daddy," and that their "dad left early."

Their itinerary sounds like a delight: "They went shopping, we took them to the museum together, we took them to 'Mary Poppins,' so they had a great trip."

So, how has she kept them unaware of what's happening to their dad, who jetted back to Los Angeles early after a brief hospital stay? The kids are at an age where Denise can regulate what kinds of TV and websites they view, so at this point the girls are thankfully NOT in the know. "I'm so grateful that they're still young enough to not know what's going on," she says.

"If they knew what was going on, obviously I would have re-scheduled these shows and be [with the kids]" but right now "they're not watching mommy on TV. I'm keeping them busy with their American Girl dolls. But because they don't know what's going on, I want to move forward and continue with my job."

Her job, besides being Super Mom, is promoting her 5-episode run on 'Blue Mountain State,' playing the ex-wife of a football coach. Her debut is Wednesday and it marks her return to TV after a year off since the end of the E! reality series, 'Denise Richards: It's Complicated.'

"I get to play a fun, outrageous, sexy character and it's great to do scripted television again," she tells me. "It's nice to be back to being an actor, and I love it."

Unless he cleans up his act really fast, Denise won't be able to shield her growing daughters from their father's horrible behavior much longer. At least Denise seems like a decent parent. Hopefully Brooke Mueller has cleaned up her act because the twins need a decent parent also.

The only way to stop this man from being relevent anymore is to stop watching his show. Change the channel, let the ratings fall and the sponsor's leave and then we won't have to hear about Charlie Sheen again.

Yea, maybe being up all night going to the hospital with Charlie - probably why he went there rather than jail, and then being up early to be on "Good Morning America" and "Fox and Friends" might have something to do with her looking tired. Give her a break, she has never been accused of anything wrong other than falling for a rich good-looking movie star when she was young. She had the sense to kick him to the curb even though she was pregnant which was a courageous thing to do.

I find Denise Richards to be pathetic. For as much as constantly talks about " protecting her children" she sacrafices ALL of it for the sake of MONEY. Who the Hell is she kidding? If he weren't a rich movie star she would have a restraining order out against him and would be living in a different state. He has beaten many women, shot one and she allows this criminal to be near her and her kids? Money talks and she is listening

The Sheen children don't have a chance. With a drunk, abusive father, a mother who doesn't have much self worth, and both parents that have no morals...what's left? Denise, seems your the only one left to give your daughter's the best possible upbringing..you need to get over yourself and staighten your act up as well. Act like a lady and a mother. Just remember things have a way of catching up to you later in life.

You all seem to forget that she was a successful actress prior to Charlie. She stopped to raise her children. Charlie Sheen did not advance her career or get her noticed. She was well known before him. Quit being jealous of the woman. She spends as much time with her girls as any other working mom. She is never found by the press to be out partying. She has done nothing irresponsible except for marrying the charming idiot when she was young.
