Denise Richards: 'All I Can Do Is Move Forward and Keep My Girls Protected'

Denise Richards had a "fun-filled weekend" with her daughters and their father, Charlie Sheen, the star's ex-husband. They took in 'Mary Poppins' on Broadway, did some shopping together and bonus, they were all staying at the ever-so-scenic Plaza Hotel! Then in the wee hours of Tuesday, you-know-who allegedly went berserk on a you-know-what in a hotel room while high on you-know-woh! Denise, who accompanied her ex to the hospital, hasn't missed a beat and continued her promotional tour for Spike TV's 'Blue Mountain State.'

While she's reluctant to dish details on the still-hazy fracas, Denise opened up to PopEater on Wednesday in a Web Exclusive about how she's handling the touchy and downright surreal situation with Sheen's darling daughters Sam, 6, and Lola, 5.

"The girls think they had a fantastic trip in New York with mommy and daddy," she tells me. Watch our interview after the jump!

Sheen's unraveling on Tuesday hasn't fazed Denise, not in the least. She has one singular goal: protect her kids. "It is what it is," she says of the scandal. "I can't change what happened. All I can do is move forward and keep my girls protected from the situation and that's what I'm doing."

According to Denise, Sam and Lola "think they had a fantastic trip in New York with mommy and daddy," and that their "dad left early."

Their itinerary sounds like a delight: "They went shopping, we took them to the museum together, we took them to 'Mary Poppins,' so they had a great trip."

So, how has she kept them unaware of what's happening to their dad, who jetted back to Los Angeles early after a brief hospital stay? The kids are at an age where Denise can regulate what kinds of TV and websites they view, so at this point the girls are thankfully NOT in the know. "I'm so grateful that they're still young enough to not know what's going on," she says.

"If they knew what was going on, obviously I would have re-scheduled these shows and be [with the kids]" but right now "they're not watching mommy on TV. I'm keeping them busy with their American Girl dolls. But because they don't know what's going on, I want to move forward and continue with my job."

Her job, besides being Super Mom, is promoting her 5-episode run on 'Blue Mountain State,' playing the ex-wife of a football coach. Her debut is Wednesday and it marks her return to TV after a year off since the end of the E! reality series, 'Denise Richards: It's Complicated.'

"I get to play a fun, outrageous, sexy character and it's great to do scripted television again," she tells me. "It's nice to be back to being an actor, and I love it."

Actually, Charlie has FIVE kids. He has an 18 or 19 year old that never gets mentioned in the press, the two with Denise, and twin boys with his latest wife. At least Denise, though I don't think a great deal of her, was smart enough NOT to let him ALONE with the kids, and to at least ATTEMPT to shield them from his mess.

What's wrong with her? He's an alcoholic, a woman hitter, psycho, and he was caught with a hooker! Why is she still with him? Oh yeah, money. I feel sorry for those little girls. Really, Denise, do you want to teach your daughters that it's okay for their future husbands to cheat, beat, and drink themselves straight into jail, or do you want to teach them to be real women and stand up for themselves? The girls are the important ones here, not Charlie or Denise.

ummmm.... she is human?! She is trying to be a good mother and protecting her children from this drama because they are too young to to understand that their father has an illness.Yes that is right i said it.. alcoholism is an illness and a 5 and a 6 year old do not need to know about adult problems so i think that denise is doing the right thing here with her kids. And to correct you on one other thing..Denise is NOT with charlie any longer. she is supervising his visits with their girls and trying to take the high road.I'm sure that Denise will tell the kids of their fathers illness when they are old enough to understand. no one goes into a relationship fully knowing what the other person is about and maybe when she was with charlie she did in fact see something good in him, but because of his problems she is no longer with him because she knew it would not be good for the kids.

People please, how many women haven't believed the best in a man until he went back to his old song and dance? I think that Denise truly saw good in Charlie when they were first together. You are forgetting that she divorced him while pregnant. NOT an easy thing to do. She is none of the things people have called her on this site. She genuinely cares about her family and is a good mother to her children. She can't change who Charlie is, and I think she is more than a good mother. Remember, she took in his two boys while he and his current ex were living out their drama. My guess is she did this because at the end of the day, those boys are her daughter's half brothers. Good for you, Denise! Way to take the high road throughout EVERYTHING! You keep on, keepin on! You were the best thing that ever happened to Charlie Sheen.

I personally love two and a half men, think the show is very amusing and Charlie Sheen is very good on the show. As for his personal choices, NOT MY BUSINESS!!! But, I do have a thought...wonder if his father, who seems like a pretty decent guy, has ever tried to intervene with Charlie about his antics, told him to clean up his act...may be a fruitless mission, who knows. Charlie is at an age where he makes his own decisions, good or bad, but as an actor, I like him a lot.

Just shut the f**k up, Denise. Charlie is the new Errol Flynn -- the "bad boy" of Hollywood. It's his brand, his mode, and we love him for it. He lives the way he wants and does what he wants. If he wants to trash a hotel room and pays for it, God love him. if he wants a toot of Coke and a hooker, so much the better. What a guy. Plus, the ratings for his TV show will be higher than ever.

Good for Denise, she seems to be a great mom. We never really hear anything negative about her and she certainly cannot control what her ex-husband does. I think she is doing the right thing by keeping it business as usual. I agree, all those adorable girls need to know is that they had a fun weekend with mom and dad. Keep doing what you are doing and hopefully one day before the the girls are old enough to be exposed to such antics Charlie will straighten up if not for himself but for all four of his children.

Hey Denise, those are Charlie's kids. They came from Charlie. You carried them for him and fed them with your eggs for 9 months but they are in fact, his kids. Your life began with YOUR FATHER.

Yes, and they're also HER kids. She's their mother, not their surrogate, dude. A child belongs to both parents, unless one parent is a deadbeat or obviously is dealing with "issues". Right now, I think supervising the visits with him and not talking him down in front of the kids is taking the high-road and being a good mother, because it's what good mothers DO.

Why do people keep saying he is good actor? He plays a rich spoiled ,drunk,womanizing entertainer named Charlie. Not much of a stretch!!!

Hey, what's all the fuss? I heard he was just paying homage to his dad's role in Apocalypse Now. You remember, at the beginning of the movie, when (ironically-or not since it is a flash forward) the song "The End" by The Doors is playing. I hear he really wants to nail that scene when they start casting for the sequel (or will it be a prequal).

I heard that Denice has a picture with the supposed Porn Star! Was this a "set up" by Denice? Sounds like it to me! She is Such a creepy looking broad, those cow eyes, and big mouth, I can't believe she ever modeled. Stop using your kids to get your ex in trouble. He seems to do quite well on his own!
