You probably know Justin Kirk best as Andy from 'Weeds,' but now he's taking his talents to the track with funny man David Arquette. In 'The Legend of Hallowdega,' the duo head to Alabama to explore the history, tradition and urban legends surrounding the famed Talladega Speedway. Normally, this sort of thing would be written off as a run-of-the-mill "mocumentary," but with director Terry Gilliam in the mix, it's set to be one hilarious adventure. We caught up with Justin to get his take on the movie as well as what it was like working with David and Terry, and he even gives us a sneak peek into the last few episodes of 'Weeds.' You probably know Justin Kirk best as Andy from 'Weeds,' but now he's taking his talents to the track with funny man David Arquette. We caught up with Justin to get his take on the movie as well as what it was like working with David and Terry, and he even gives us a sneak peek into the last few episodes of 'Weeds.' Check out our exclusive interview after the jump.So fill me in on your new movie, 'Hollowdega.'
Well, I don't like to use the word "mockumentary," but the gist of it is, I play a host for a TV show called 'The World of the Unexplained,' where I go around the world and explore various mysteries, and in this episode I explore the curse of the Talladega race track, like where there have been various crashes over the years. There are theories about this in real life, so it sort of overlaps some, but all for fun, one would hope. And it's directed by Terry Gillian, so what do you have to lose?
Do you think these have the potential to become a series?
That's funny, because we joked about doing a comedy series of 'The World of the Unexplained,' where we go to various places around the world. But no, I think this was just a good idea the good people of [Amp?] came up with, and they brought Terry in, and not too long after David Arquette and myself. It was really on the fly with not a lot of preparation, and we headed down to Talladega, and what you see is on the TV or the computer, wherever you decide to watch it.
Well, what we see is you wearing a pretty sick Indiana Jones costume.
Yeah! I'm very excited about that hat. On the last day, Terry did a little art on it and gave it to me as a sort of wrap gift, which is nice. What I try to with the clothes and props for this guy, I think the idea is that he's a little bit of a fraud, you know, so my backpack and sunglasses are all brand new and still have the tags on them. You gotta start with the clothes, and the rest comes along.
In going along with the Talladega urban legend, what's your favorite urban legend?
Oh boy. The thing that made me perfect for this role, I was almost as clueless as he was, and woefully undereducated in the world of NASCAR and Talladega, so I was sort of going by the seat of my pants, as they say. I like the one we put in the movie, but I won't mention it, because it's sort of in the climax of the movie. I don't want to give away any spoilers.
So what's it like working with David Arquette?
David Arquette is everything you think he's going be times 10 when you meet the guy. He is fueled from within, but also a great guy, and I think he did a pretty hilarious job with his character.
Do you have any great costume plans for Halloween?
You know, last year I was doing a play in New York, and my co-star Marc (Paul Gosselaar) and I were Beavis and Butthead. And that was a lot of fun, but this year I don't have anything going on. It helps when I'm working at the time, and I have the costume department to help me. I think I might just go to a friend's house, have a drink and pass out candy to trick or treaters.
You've got a few episodes of 'Weeds' left. What can we expect?
Oh, I can't tell you that. I don't even give my mother spoilers, but I can be vague with you. It's one of my favorite clips. 'Weeds' is always known for it's cliffhangers at the big finale, and this one is one of my favorites, it's a great story. So look for that.
