'Glee' Cast, Jack Nicholson, More Bring 'Rocky Horror' To Life In LA

Halloween weekend in LA got off to a star-studded start with a stellar cast acting out 'The Rocky Horror Picture Show.' Joining in the fray were 'Glee' stars
Lea Michele and
Matthew Morrison (as Brad and Janet), Jack Nicholson, sharing the role of narrator with Danny DeVito, and 'Nip/Tuck' star Julian McMahon as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. LA's Wiltern Theater held the show as a benefit for
The Painted Turtle, an organization for children with life-threatening illnesses.
The night was brilliantly conceived by producer Lou Adler and 'High School Musical' director Kenny Ortega to stay in the 'Rocky Horror' tradition. An expert shadow-cast acted out the original film on the Wiltern stage while the celebrities came on to perform various musical numbers to rousing applause. Michele and Morrison, who rocked 'Rocky Horror' this week with their
big 'Glee' episode, came out early in the production to deliver a wonderful 'Over At The Frankenstein Place.'
The biggest early ovation came for Nicholson, who brought his own inimitable style to 'Rocky Horror' with his reading of the introduction. Nicholson attempted to hush the adoring crowd, who were not so adoring that they didn't try to correct him aloud when he said "night out" as opposed to "night in" in the famous monologue.
Celebrities and all, it was a very 'Rocky Horror' crowd, jumping up to do 'The Time Warp,' of course, when Lucas Grabeel as Riff-Raff and Evan Rachel Wood as Magenta, led the shadow-cast in a full scale dance production onstage. As 'Rocky Horror' devotees know, it's 'Time Warp' that leads to Frank-N-Furter's grandiose entrance and 'Sweet Transvestite' musical number. And McMahon, in full Frank lingerie, camped it up beautifully, embracing his inner mad scientist/sweet transvestite throughout the show.

Other musical highlights included 'Lost' star Jorge Garcia (right) rocking Eddie's 'Hot Patootie-Bless My Soul,' a song originally done by Meat Loaf in the play. Melora Hardin, as Columbia, joined Gabreel and Wood for 'The Time Warp,' and got in on McMahon's 'I'm Going Home.'
After the performance, Adler introduced the whole cast, in the Broadway spirit of the evening, bringing up some special guests in the audience, including Barry Bostwick, who played Brad in the original movie. As mentioned, this was a 'Rocky Horror' audience, and so even with Jack Nicholson -- Hollywood royalty -- in the house, the biggest hand of the night came when Adler brought up Frank-N-Furter himself, Tim Curry, who modestly took the stage to the type of ovation usually reserved for the likes of Bono.
"This is his kingdom," a beaming Evan Rachel Wood told
PopEater after the show -- while jumping up and down like a 12-year-old spotting Justin Bieber.
"He kissed my hand and told me I was beautiful," a blissed-out Wood said after meeting Curry. Understandable for a hardcore 'Rocky Horror' fan who first saw the movie when she was 7 years old. What did she learn about the movie after actually acting in a stage version? "It's hard work," she said, laughing. "I was winded doing 'The Time Warp.' "
A relative newbie to the 'Rocky Horror' world, Nicole Scherzinger, as Trixie, and as the first celebrity onstage, was also impressed. "I always prefer being on stage to being in the audience," she told
PopEater. Although new to the age-old craze, Scherzinger caught onto what Curry what means to 'The Rocky Horror Universe' quickly.
Asked her favorite part of the night, Scherzinger said, "I think when Tim Curry was here." It definitely put a capper on an amazing night, when the greatest cult musical of all time was afforded its Hollywood due.

There were also some other people at this event that are well worth mentioning: Jesse Merlin, Jaime Froeming, Tom Amici, Larry and Kate Veizel, Bernie Bregman, Bayne ST John, Sal Piro, and others. :) These are just some of the people that perform Rocky Horror at the weekly midnight shows in theaters in New York, California,New Jersey, and elsewhere, and were invited down for the event. They all looked fantasric in their costumes, and since they are a part of the people that keep Rocky Horror alive and strong, I wanted to give them some props. HOOPLA, YOU GUYS!
