Universal Pictures addressed the furor over its trailer for 'The Dilemma,' in which Vince Vaughn's character calls an electric car gay, by yanking the clip and editing the remark out of a newly released version. But tweaking the trailer is apparently as far as the studio -- and Ron Howard -- intends to go.
The director has penned a lengthy statement to an L.A. Times blogger, philosophizing about his own dilemma: cut the line from the finished film, as requested by GLAAD (the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and its supporters, or preserve the inflammatory wisecrack, even if he personally disagrees with the sentiment.
The upshot is that Howard will keep the joke in his final cut. Sources say he considered the matter seriously, consulting various advisers within his studio, his cast and "the larger comedy community," before taking a stand.
"I believe in sensitivity but not censorship," Howard says, as he defends both the studio's choice to modify the trailer, and his own choice to keep his movie (due in theaters in mid-January) intact. "I don't strip my films of everything that I might personally find inappropriate....I defend the right for some people to express offense at a joke as strongly as I do the right for that joke to be in a film. But if storytellers, comedians, actors and artists are strong armed into making creative changes, it will endanger comedy as both entertainment and a provoker of thought.
Meanwhile, GLAAD isn't buying it. "At a time when so many in our country are speaking out against the bullying of gay youth," said Jarrett Barrios, president of the organization, "Universal was right to acknowledge the offensive nature of this 'joke' when it removed it from trailers. Unfortunately, by leaving it in the movie, they are now contributing to the problem."

Thousands signed a petition last month to ask Universal to edit the joke out of the trailer. It remains to be seen whether more 'Dilemma' protests will advance the dialogue about anti-gay language in our society, or merely boost publicity for the film..I love this , So does My boyfriend .he is almost 11year older than me .i met him via age'gapsingles.c'om a nice place for seeking age le ss love.which gives you a chance to make your life better and open opportunities for you to meet the attractive young girls and treat you like a king. Maybe you wanna check it out or tell your friends..
I will not see that movie and any others he might make. Shame on you Opie.

HEY MAGGIE,
Just because you CLAIM to have a gay friend doesn't make your senseless argument correct. Do you have black friends who think its funny to have people say "Thats SO Ghetto!".

Good! The joke had nothing to do with gay people. People are was to sensitive. Politically correct has gone WAY overboard!
And no I on't hate Gay people, I have a Gay family member.

Oops... you left OFF the F in "left off".
You have a gay family member, so that makes it ok? Right.
The term is used in a derogatory way. Having family or friends who are gay means you should probably be more understanding--not less.
You have a gay family member, not a *G*ay family member. What is it with everyone wanting to make proper nouns of non-proper nouns?
What an uptight world we live in! It's a JOKE! Remember what it's like to laugh? Let it go, people. There are worse things in the world than using the word "gay" in a joke!!

Ha ha ha .... It's a joke people .... dont be so sensitive
You are right on, Tara. Furthermore, Ron Howard shouldn't back off something that has been popular language among kids for years. Maybe future generations of them won't label anything "gay", but right now they still do!
I agree. Waaaay too much political correctness in the world. Lighten up and get a sense of humor.
The "problem", too often, is in your head. Everybody gets discriminated against by somebody for something. If you're too tall, too short, too skinny, too fat, too stupid or too smart there's always somebody who will take a shot at you. Get over it! People are the way they are and we all have to deal with it. What would happen if gay people started getting snarky about straight people? Would straight people start forming organizations demanding protection? We all have to keep in mind the only opinion that really matters is the one which we have about ourselves.

But there aren't that many skinny kids that get bullied, sometimes to the point of suicide, and there aren't gangs of skinheads who stalk and beat skinny kids and skinny kids don't get discriminated against that much when looking for jobs. All discrimination is wrong, but some is more intense than others.
