David Cross Explains 'Alvin and the Chipmunks': 'Yeah, I Made a Ton of Money'Look, if you're a funny guy these days, a comic with any discernible amount of cred, just face it: You're going to star in a CG take on a kids' classic, audiences will pan it, your fans will trash you or at least express anguished puzzlement by screaming, "Sellout!!"

So in the vein of Bill Murray confessing his 'Garfield' sins to GQ recently, David Cross has broken down his decision to take 'Alvin and the Chipmunks' to Vulture.

"I kind of brought [the Internet hate] upon myself, or certainly exacerbated the situation, by stupidly responding to some of the stuff that was being posted about me taking the role," Cross said. "Trust me, I have learned my lesson. I have learned to -- which I should have done the entire time -- say, I don't give a s--- what Paygo23 in Amarillo thinks about me doing 'Alvin and the Chipmunks.' Why should I care? I'm an adult. And even more than that, since then I have not just owned it but have unabashedly gone, 'Yeah, I did it for the money.' I made a ton of money."

Cross, 46, said the film bought him a five-acre home in the woods in upstate New York, where he "constantly" spends time and works on writing and television work. "Because of 'Alvin and the Chipmunks,' if I didn't work again for two and a half years, I'd be fine."
