Portia de Rossi Says Eating 300 Calories a Day 'Made Perfect Sense'

Portia de Rossi has emerged in recent years as one of Hollywood's funniest females, but her road to success hasn't always been an easy one.
The 'Arrested Development' star, who is now happily married to
Ellen DeGeneres, spent much of her career struggling with her sexuality and eating disorders. The actress details her journey to self-acceptance in her new book, 'Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain.'
In the late 1990s, after landing a plum role as buttoned-up lawyer Nelle Porter on 'Ally McBeal,' de Rossi found herself in the midst of a self-esteem crisis, eventually leading to a battle with anorexia and bulimia. The actress, who whittled her figure down to a shocking 82 pounds, tells
PEOPLE, "I didn't think I was crazy to only eat 300 calories a day. That made perfect sense to me."
De Rossi has since overcome her struggles with food, forgoing weigh-ins and sticking to healthy eating, but despite her impressive recovery, the actress is still the first to point out her flaws. "Look, I don't think I'm perfect. I still don't like my thighs, but I'm not going to do anything to compromise my health or my sanity to change them."
Admitting her sexuality to herself and the public proved to be yet another challenge for the star, but one that allowed her to find happiness. "My struggle with anorexia, coming to terms with my sexuality, I realized I had struggled with self-acceptance my whole life," she says. "To be able to get to a point where you're just happy with who you are, I think that's when you know what real peace feels like."
The actress also
recently sat down with both
Oprah Winfrey and her wife Ellen to discuss her struggles.

Seeing Taylor Swift on DWTS made me think she has the same problem Portia had. Taylor is way too thin. Arms are scarey looking.

I'm a 6' 2' male eat 700 to 1000 cal a day and I was 190 with a 45 min cardio plan a day.
Of course it would make "perfect sense" to a hollywood airhead.

There are plenty of non-Hollywood types who suffer from anorexia.
I'm sure they all think that what they are doing "makes perfect sense" because they are meeting their goals of losing weight, whether its unhealthy or not. All they care about is the number on the scale. To call her an "air head" is insulting to ALL who suffer from the diseases of anorexia and bulimia.
Can we please stay away from the name-calling? I was on a diet of 500 calories for a long time and stil felt fat. It was perfectly normal for me to be on 500 calories.
Portia is a beautiful woman inside and out. Ellen is beautiful inside and out also. I cant wait to get a copy of Portia's book.
I have to wonder about someone who would have "goat" for their sign in.I grew up on a farm and goats really smelled bad.
Although I'll never understand the 'thin' thing, I do agree that women look more feminine when not surrounded by blubber. I was one of the lucky ones; 5'11" & weighed 117 lbs. I couldn't gain weight if I wanted to. Fortunately, I have great bone structure & didn't appear boney ugly. I turned many heads, I modeled, I dated a lot of prominent men & loved my life.
To this day, I cannot imagine going through anorexia or bullemia to be thin. However, during my modeling days, I witnessed a lot of beautiful women struggling, including having back teeth pulled for that sunken face look. While I ate hamburgers for lunch, they shared a salad.
Society does terrible things to human beings, especially women. I tell you now, your beauty will never last, nor will your figure, no matter what you do, time does what it's programmed to do, BUT, what you do with your life as a living being, will stay with you forever.

Cripes, what do some of you want, a f-n medal? You talk about how horrible Hollywood is, then talk about how above it all you were by being how wonderful you were at such a thin f-n weight you were. Do you NOT possibly see how you're part of the problem?
You guys anorexia and bulimia are mental disorders. It is more than wanting to be skinny. It is about control and the lack of it. When you are mentally sick, it is easy to think that what you are doing is normal and the bad part of this disease is unlike alchol and drugs you can't give up food totally if you want to live. I feel for this lady and hope that she helps people be able to see her story in them.
