John Mayer at VH1 Save The Music GalaThe hills were alive with the sound of music Monday night in New York City as the stars paid tribute to Julie Andrews, John Legend and John Mayer, who were all honored at VH1's Save the Music Foundation gala.

Perhaps the most-talked about moment of the evening centered around Mayer's acceptance speech. The Grammy-winning musician insisted he didn't want anything written on the teleprompter because he figured he'd been doing so well speaking off the cuff that he'd continue the trend. "Julie Andrews is here, and I'm making a fool out of myself," Mayer said.

After fumbling through an awkward story about vaginal birth and wine, Mayer got back on track and spoke passionately about why music needs to get back into the classroom. "If you want to stop bullying, give the guy a guitar," he said.
