Heidi Montag's Mom Struggling to Pay Bills

Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt recently admitted to blowing $10 million on their Hollywood lifestyle, but for other members of their family, there was no life of luxury to begin with.

Montag's mother, Darlene Egelhoff, who made a few guest appearances on 'The Hills,' tells PEOPLE she is struggling to make ends meet with her job as a maid.

"The work is sporadic and competitive. [It] is not enough to pay the bills."

Egelhoff, who co-owned the popular restaurant Timberlines with husband Tim in Montag's hometown of Crested Butte, Colorado, says that the family is barely scraping by after they were forced to close up shop after 21 years in business.

"We're a tourist town, so our business department was dependent on the economy. Business started declining. We tried to make the necessary adjustments, but we were just not quite in time."

Egelhoff, who describes her pride in son Sky's decision to help out the family by participating in a school-sponsored free lunch program, says that despite her daughter's fortune, she has only once asked Heidi for money.

"The restaurant was struggling, and I was crying on the phone. Heidi very generously wired me a check that day. That kept the restaurant afloat for at least six months. It was so generous and helpful."

Despite the financial difficulties ahead, Egelhoff says that her faith in God and love for her children will help her through.

"The most difficult situations we go through in life are opportunities," she says. "That's when we build character and strength – during difficult times."

Hey meeker-when I posted I didn't see your reference to her looking like a blowup doll-guees we think alike-have a good one.

Lets see at one time Heidi and her doormat of a husband had 10 million dollars-wasted on cars,homes -her SOOOOOOO successful singing career-and of couse the plastic surgeries that made her look like a blow up doll. She should have helped her parents out before she squandered all that cash. Sorry mom-you failed somehow to raise a daughter that is so self absorbed and vain-my parents wouldn't have needed to ask-would have given it willingly.

These people are not real...they live way beyond their means. Instead of putting money away they would rather splurge it right away so they look better to the outside world....now they are left with nothing and we are supposed to feel sorry for them. Boo frickety Hoo!

She can't pay bills, ask for a bailout, you're to well known to fail. and anyway the way the cost of living have tippled, any one who can keep up with everything needs to be investigated, they are doing something illegal.

This is really sad, Speidi ran through all their money on meaningless things and now when it could be of real use, they don't have it. The smart thing would have been to hire financial advisers to help them save and invest some of the money they earned while filming "The Hills." Heidi should have paid off her parent's home and cars that way they wouldn't have to worry about making a car or mortgage payment....hopefully everything will work out for Heidi's family.

I feel no more sympathy for this woman than I do for anyone who is struggling financial. Is the undercurrent here that we are all supposed to be up in arms b/c her wacko daughter will not give her money? That is apparently the motive behind this woman going "public" with her sob story that is shared by millions of people.

You know as a parent, this just crumbles me. I wouldn't expect my kid to pay my way if they ever made it big, but if I was about to lose my family business, and if I was working as a MAID barely paying bills and my damn kid couldn't help me out? This is just sick. Hope Heidi and her stupid brainless man enjoy their ten million because the lifestyle wont last...not unless she goes into porn because that's all she seems good for.
