Shanna Moakler on Her New Series, 'Bridalplasty'

The E! network's new series "Bridalplasty" features 12 brides-to-be competing for a shocking prize, even by reality-TV standards: The "winner" literally gets cut, with her wish list of prenuptial cosmetic surgeries being fulfilled in advance of a celebrity-style dream wedding.
Appalled? Don't be, says the show's host, onetime Miss USA Shanna Moakler. From the former Playboy centerfold's perspective, a prenuptial nip-and-tuck is as normal as picking out china: "Brides are doing plastic surgery before their weddings every day."
In anticipation of the Nov. 28 premiere,
StyleList spoke with Moakler (famous among reality-TV fans for MTV's 'Meet the Barkers' with ex Travis Barker) and Dr. Terry Dubrow, 'Bridalplasty' resident cosmetic surgeon (formerly of the makeover show 'The Swan').
StyleList: Shanna, your contestants are engaged to men who loved them enough to propose. What did they need to change?
Shanna Moakler: Well, they don't need to change anything. I thought some of the girls were stunning, but plastic surgery is a very personal decision. That said, I'm in the beauty business, I run a pageant (Miss California USA). I have to be honest, I saw things I would want to fix on some of the women.
SL: Dr. Dubrow, why do something as drastic as surgery before a wedding?
Dr. Terry Dubrow: It's very common for a woman to have a breast augmentation to fill out their dress. In older women (getting married) I do facelifts a lot. I also do a lot of mother-in-laws! The goal seems is to be a better version of yourself. Along with hair extensions and makeup (surgery) has become a part of getting ready for the big day.
SL: Some of these women want so much surgery, it sounds like they're competing with
Heidi Montag.
TD: Even though I did "The Swan," I'm not into surgery that changes your look that much. The best surgery is virtually invisible. When you see a reputable plastic surgeon he or she helps you devise a series of procedures that are safe and effective. We have some women who have quite a long list of procedures they want, but that's not right for everyone.
SL: What motivates the contestants to compete?
SM: Some want the surgery, some the dream wedding. I think you are going to find these women very relatable in some cases. We have a contestant who's had breast cancer and a woman who was on 'The Biggest Loser,' who lost 90 pounds through diet and exercise. She has so much excess skin it doesn't matter how many crunches she does; it's not going away. She needs surgery to get rid of it.
SL: Shanna, I'm assuming you've had some plastic surgery yourself?
SM: I haven't had anything. Open up my Playboy and that's all me. I do injectables, I have a little line in my forehead that bugs me. My approach to looking good is avoid the sun, good diet, exercise, some good Botox and everything in moderation. But I would love to get my boobs done and my tummy. I've had three kids by C-section and trust me, no amount of sit-ups can fix that. I'm 35 and I would like more children, so I'm just not ready.
SL: Doctor, how do you respond to the critics of the show who think you've gone too far?
TD: I think they should reserve their criticism until they've seen a few episodes. We're not doing anything that's not being done throughout the world.

the idea behind this show has made me sick to my stomach since the first time I heard of it. What is wrong with accepting ourselves and our potential partners as we are?

putrid premise...the groom will not even recognize the bride at the alter, and will probably feel like he is messing with a plastic doll that night...disgusting...dude...remember...this will be only the beginning...if she wins, cancel the wedding...

Hollywood is so hypocritical! For example, actors and actresses are always on their soap boxes professing their concern for social issues, yet they behave exactly opposite of what is healthy. They promote self-acceptance, yet are superficial and addicted to plastic surgery. They profess to be against bullies, yet promote movies such as mean girls, fight club and extreme violence in movies. They are always talking about healthy lifestyles, yet it appears most of them are in and out of rehab on a regular basis. Hypocrites! And, what is sad is that folks in entertainment are who kids look up to the most. No longer are those who protect us and defend our country their heroes but losers like GaGa are making tons of money because they dress or behave outrageously. It's a shame and our society is paying dearly.

Great post, but GaGa is not a loser. Losers are not that famous and they don't sell that many records.
Reality? Yes, I agree that IS a possibility (probability?). Disgusting and a definite "what NOT to watch?" Totally...absolutely.

I personally wouldn't do it but if this makes them feel better then go for it. If these women are truly smart, they should know that no amount of surgery can make their marriage last. Beauty is only skin deep. They are tons of beautiful people with no substance underneath.

You have got to be kidding me. One of the dumbest shows ever.

Well as long as the rest of the world is doing it...hey in some countries women prioritize plastic surgery over feeding and clothing their children, we should do that to. And how about stoning and genital mutilation and cannibalism, that happens somewhere - why not here? What a stupid defense.

I watched the show today because I am stuck in the house sick with a bad cold, and that show made me sicker. The worst part was when Shana Moakler (who failed miserably in her marriage, ever see her reality show she was pathetic?), says a final line to the beautiful black woman who is eliminated first. It went something like "You will still have a wedding, it just won't be perfect." How rude! A wedding is perfect if you have love between yourself and your husband to be. It's total bliss if you have your loved ones there with you and every one is healthy. Those shows are what is wrong with America. Boycott it! :)
