Aretha Franklin: Surgery Was 'Highly Successful'

The Queen of Soul released a statement Thursday saying her surgery was "highly successful" and thanking her fans for their well wishes, the Associated Press reports. It was not revealed why the singer needed surgery in the statement.

"God is still in control. I had superb doctors and nurses whom were blessed by all the prayers of the city and the country," the statement continued.

News of Franklin's surgery comes about a month after she announced she was canceling all concert dates and personal appearances through May on the order of her doctors. That announcement came after Franklin's brief visit to a Detroit hospital--no details were given about her condition at the time.

It's been a difficult several months for Franklin, whose hits include '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,' 'Chain of Fools' and her signature song 'Respect.'

Her adult son, Eddie, was beaten by three men at a Detroit gas station in September. And a month earlier, she broke ribs in a fall, causing her to miss two free concerts in New York.

One of the shows now being canceled is a Christmas concert scheduled for Detroit's Fox Theatre on Dec. 9. Theater operator Olympia Entertainment said the show was being called off "due to medical reasons."

Aretha is officially a Beachmaster. OMG a giant elephant seal with hair extensions (bad hair extensions) gives new meaning to the concept of "lipstick on a pig". Aretha, listen up woman. Put down that hamburger and march over to the mirror. Take a look. Pride, think pride. Remember that R-E-S-P-E-C-T thing? I know you don't have any - get some. Those of you who make a living in the entertainment business do so in large part because of your looks and appearance. When I say in large part I don't mean large size. I know you were never a real looker but you had some sex appeal. That is gone, 300 pounds back, and you can't continue to haul yourself up on the beach to make appearances looking like that. R-E-S-P-E-C-T was a loooooooooooong time ago woman and you can't fall back on that ditty anylong. Get some r-e-s-p-e-c-t for the few fans you have left and for all the other legitimate entertainers in your business who take pride in their appearance - and who diligently work at maintaining some semblance of an acceptable public visage. She is one of those artists that the critics have been exagerating about for decades. She was never really that great. And she has gotten fat over the years off of this reputation that others have painted for her. She clearly let herself go,just like most Hoochie Mommas do. Who cares. And I am sure her son is a criminal. Prolly ripped off a drug customer and got his butt beat. Or got robbed of his stash in the beating.
