Johnny Depp Reveals Why He Hasn't Married Longtime Girlfriend Vanessa Paradis

Johnny Depp and longtime girlfriend Vanessa Paradis have been a couple for more than 12 years and have two children--but marriage isn't happening anytime soon. The critically acclaimed actor reveals to Extra why they haven't tied the knot.

"I never found myself needing that piece of paper," Depp confessed. "Marriage is really from soul to soul, heart to heart. You don't need somebody to say, okay you're married... If Vanessa wanted to get hitched, why not... But the thing is, I'd be so scared of ruining her last name. She's got such a good last name."

The actor also revealed his holiday plans with Paradis and his kids, Lily-Rose Melody, 11, and John Christopher, 8: "Sleeping, sleeping and playing with a lot of toys with my son. Hanging out with the kiddies."

He concluded the interview by talking about Angelina Jolie, his co-star in the upcoming flick, 'The Tourist.' "She's just a regular gal... with a perverse sense of humor. She's got a vivid and energetic sense of humor. She doesn't mind traveling to the dark or to the very weird."

Chris: I agree that that is correct in the United States, but as residents/citizens of France, I'm not sure they have the same laws. Do you know how France interprets this? Maybe it is the same. Either way, while they can certainly choose whatever path they wish, I just don't buy his explanation.

I think TAYLOR SWIFT was helped somewhat by the K A N Y E WEST drunken interruption inident, in that it got her noticed by all kinds of folks that don't care for Country Music, and got her somewhat of a sympathy vote. She WAS already on the rise, but he helped speed it up. She would have got there anyhow but he gave her a cool boost. That said, I think she is quite attractive with makeup and can be a model, and maybe learn to act as well. I don't love her music that much and the songs ARE not memorable enough, although she can sing and hopefully her songwriting will mature and improve in the future.

You are correct about that. I just saw Taylor's E True Hollywood Story and her ? manager or some guy who was talking throughout the program, did thank Kanye for making Taylor even more well known. She is a super talented sond writer and singer.

If it were money she could get it without marrying him. With 2 kids and 12 years...its called palimony and child support.
Some people are not as religious as others and do not see the need for the ancient ritual. That is fine, they appear to be managing a healthy long term relationship without the ceremony. Because they are private they will probably never tell their intimate dedication they have made to each other (this does not require a wedding)

The only thing I don't really like about him .... he won't marry the mother of his children and the woman who has been with him for tweleve years. What's so great about her last name? Do the children have her last name then? Or his last name? Maybe they can pick a name out of a hat when they get older.

Wow... how can anyone not get that he's joking about the last name? They seem happy -- he did say if Vanessa wanted to get married, they would -- and it seems as though they have a much more stable relationship than a lot of celebs who are officially married. He's right ... relationships are defined in the heart, not the courthouse or church.

Back in the day when people chose last names, they were at such political odds with the government over taxes, to get even with the King, they chose gross, stupid, and really offensive names. They thought the last name requirement was idiotic, so 1000 years later or so, they are stuck that that horrible last name. Shows his ancestors had a sense of humor too.

It's not about "the piece of paper" or the legal argument. It's about the public declaration, which admittedly, celebrities don't "need." Those who do choose to marry, want to tell the world they are loved and they have someone who loves them as much. We can't all have an interview when we want to say as much.

Oh I am so sorry they don't live up to YOUR expectations. They are doing fine and you have no idea of their dedication and devotion they have for each other. Not everyone thinks that the church and or state needs to be involved in their private intimate relationships. Just because they don't fall into YOUR idea of a healthy relationship doesn't mean they are immoral. Religions do NOT define morality...behavior and actions do. You can keep your ancient ceremony and leave the Judgment at the door.
