When it comes to showbiz's biggest awards -- Oscars, Grammys, Emmys -- someone is bound to get left in the dust. Each category only gets five nominees, after all, so snubs are expected. But this year's Grammy nominations came complete with a glaring and epic fail: The recording academy forgot to nominate Lady Gaga's awesome 'Bad Romance' for either Song of the Year or Record of the Year.
And, well, we think that's pretty much blasphemy!
'Bad Romance' was one of the biggest and most acclaimed songs of the year. It reached No. 1 in 19 countries, spent 29 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart and has sold over 4 million digital downloads in the U.S. In January, the track's ubiquity was cemented when Nielsen Soundscan announced that it had set the record for most weekly plays in the 17-year history of Billboard's Pop Songs radio airplay tally.
There's also the epic video, which earlier this year won seven MTV Video Music Awards and has been viewed about 314 million times on YouTube -- a tally that helped Gaga take down Justin Bieber to become the first artist in history to top 1 billion views on the popular video sharing site.
While the Grammys certainly aren't intended as a popularity contest, 'Bad Romance' is a legitimately great song and deserved to be recognized. It may not be lyrically complex, but it's absolutely infectious – admit it, you know every single word, and isn't that a hallmark of good songwriting? – and the whole thing is swaddled in a "ferocious" beat that, per MTV, "stays at a low boil for most [of the song] ... rising up in an ecstatic, Erasure-esque throb during the chorus."
It's a song that, according to Rolling Stone, "makes [Gaga's] name a Teutonic chant."
And lest we forget, she of the meat dress differs from many of her contemporaries -- hello, Katy Perry -- in that she writes and produces (often with collaborators) all of her own tunes. Song of the Year is a writer's prize, while Record of the Year celebrates the artist, producers and engineers of a particular track. On virtually all of her songs, Gaga is both a songwriter and a producer, so why not give her a little love where it counts? Yes, her vocal performance on 'Bad Romance' is certainly worth celebrating, as the Grammys rightly did with a nod for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, but what about all the behind-the-scenes work that went in to making it a monster hit? It didn't write or produce itself.
But don't take our word for it that a crime against popular music has been committed (we admit we have a hard time being objective when it comes to Gaga) -- most major music critics expected it would be nominated for both prizes too. Over at GoldDerby, which tracks and predicts the nominees for the biggest awards in music, film and television, each of its pundits not only selected 'Bad Romance' as a contender for Record of the Year, every single one chose it as their top pick for the prize. (Incidentally, they were correct about three of the five nominees for the award.)
This isn't the first time Gaga has been snubbed by the Grammys. Last year, she took home two prizes (Best Dance Album and Best Dance Recording) for her debut set, 'The Fame,' but despite three other nominations in the major categories, including both Song and Record of the year, and immeasurable buzz, she was shut out of all the major awards.
Then, earlier this year, the recording academy was forced to amend its eligibility guidelines for Best New Artist after Gaga was disqualified from consideration because she had been nominated previously for her single 'Just Dance,' though her album had not been released in time to qualify for the 2009 awards. Recording academy president Neil Portnow even admitted that the situation Gaga found herself in precipitated the change. "There will be some changes so that particular situation won't repeat itself," Portnow said.
In the aftermath of Gagagate, the academy clarified its new rules for Best New Artist: "If an artist/group is nominated (but does not win) for the release of a single or as a featured artist or collaborator on a compilation or other artist's album before the artist/group has released an entire album (and becomes eligible in this category for the first time), the artist/group may enter this category in the eligibility year during which his/her/their first album is released."
Of course, Gaga got a lion's share of Grammy nominations yesterday, six in all, including Album of the Year for 'The Fame Monster.' And 'Romance' did score nods for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Short Form Video (it's a shoo-in to take that one home, right?). But year after year, the Grammys are routinely slammed by music critics as being out of touch, and not letting one of the year's biggest songs shine in its two biggest categories isn't going to do much to dispel that notion.
If she hadn't temporarily given up Twitter and Facebook as part of the "Digital Life Sacrifice" campaign to raise money for Keep A Child Alive, we expect Gaga'd be tweeting her gratitude for the nominations she did receive (she's nice like that) while pledging her undying allegiance to her "Little Monsters" as we speak. But for an artist who recently proclaimed that her forthcoming album, 'Born this Way,' will be "the greatest album of this decade," you know it stings a little that her most recognizable hit didn't make the year-end cut.
Love GaGa LOVED her concert in Pgh and I've said it before and I'll say it again this is one of my top 5 video's/songs of all time and it should be in EVERY category that it could technically be in. Twitter: ShelbyT20
You can't redefine the word blasphemy. What a shame Lady Gaga failed to receive all the attention she sets out to achieve by her "look at me" personality. However, Lady Gaga should be considered blasphemous based on her shock value and her screwed up ideals. Madonna was mild considering this freak girl.
I refuse to take seriously any awards ceremony that nominates Katy Perry in not one but four categories. At least Lady Gaga can sing, play the piano and write her own songs.
I WILL NEVER watch that cheap channel CBS stupid fakes GRAMMYS IF no wasnt for BAD ROMANCE and the other 8 number 1 of MY LADY GAGA The stupid music industry will be nothing but MY LADY GAGA DOESN'T NEED ANY AWARD MY LADY GAGA HAS SOMETHIS THAT IS MORE IMPORTSNT THAT A stupid fake award and something that those WOULD LIKE TO HAVE BILLIONS AND BILLIONS OF LITTLE MONSTERS I LOBE YOU SO MUCH MY LADY GAGA and we all ready know that BAD ROMANCE IS THE SONG AND THE RECORD NOT OF THE YEAR IS OF THE DECADE
I totally agree with u!! lady gaga is the best artist ever! they nominate 'The House That Built Me' Miranda Lambert for song of the year and they didnt nominate bad romance?! they are not fair! who listens to miranda? who ever chosen the nominations are not fair!
I own an indie record label and the Grammy Awards are most certainly a popularity contest and I can prove it. The Grammy's are totally flawed and biased towards Major Label artists and sales records.
Maybe it's because the Grammy folks realized that Lady Gaga is awful!!!!! She's an egotistical freak who only cares about being in the lime-light. It's a shame that she has the mainstream media and general public fooled. Her 15 minutes are almost up...
Her fifteen minutes are up? Are you joking? She is releasing a new album in February, has a duet with Elton John for a new movie, fights tooth and nail for gay rights, and is the most selfless, whole hearted pop star in years. She cares, and you need to do some research before thinking she is anywhere close to shutting down. It's not imaginable how ignorant you are.
I could care less about the Grammys so long as that country bumpkin hick Taylor Swift doesn't win artist of the year, she doesn't write her own songs either. Not a fan of Lady Ga Ga either, but AT LEAST she WRITES and produces her material.
This is just proof that these awards/award shows really mean nothing anymore. The nominations and winners are artists and songs that no one even knows, except for the convoluted group of people who pick them. The numbers and dollars are telling- Lady Gaga shouldn't feel offended or disappointed. The people have spoken... her concerts are sold out, and her music is huge. That is the real award.
The Grammie awards are like the rock and roll hall of fame induction..........The trophy's they hand out should look like a turd because that's what they both are............Turds
Bad Romance is a phenomenal vid and song. Gaga is extremely talented as a performer and a songwriter/singer. She's her own industry. Why would she care about grammies - she defines music. If she was overlooked, it was intentionally done by some mean-spirited and small-minded plebians.
Who cares about these dumb awards anyway? Just an excuse for these narcissists to get together and kiss each others butts and heap fake praise upon each other. And why do these fans get so upset over them? These stupid fans could be living in utter poverty with nothing to eat and they would be defending their celebrities with their last breaths. Eminem is up for 10 of these Grammys. Thats all you need to know about how dumb they are.
What a silly mommy! Katie Holmes takes Suri into the water in her clothes as the two spend the afternoon at the beach in Miami. More of Today's Hottest Photos

How legitimate are the Grammys?
Well, "My Humps" has won. I wouldn't be too worried about the validity of this award show.

I don't think it's that big of a deal. I went to the Grammy website and saw Lady GaGa's work have at least 4 nominations!
Quit whining.
