Troops Boo Kathy Griffin for Bristol Palin Fat Jokes

The troops at the Marine Corps Air Station in California booed Kathy Griffin at 'VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops' for a lame joke taunting Bristol Palin for seemingly being the "only contestant in the history of ['Dancing With the Stars'] to actually gain weight" during the show. As criticism for Kathy mounts a day after the special aired, sources tell me VH1 nearly cut the ugly moment out of the show.

"There was talk at VH1 about editing out the joke and the reaction to it but in the end we decided to leave it in," a network insider tells me. "It made the event feel live and Kathy is a big girl. It's not the first time one of her jokes have failed."

In case you missed it, the failed joke went like so: "We got two words: Bristol Palin." Griffin began, which almost instantly was answered by jeering. "You're gonna like this ... [Bristol is] the only contestant in the history of the show to actually gain weight. ... She gained like 30 pounds a week. I swear to God, it was fantastic -- she's like the white 'Precious.'"

Cue the cat calls and escalating booing.

This isn't the first time Kathy has used the Palin clan in her act. Last year she walked the red carpet with the father of Bristol's baby, Levi Johnson, at The Teen Choice Awards and even announced/joked they were dating. She also took Levi along with her to Sarah's hometown of Wasilla, Alaska to poke fun at the former Governor.

During the failed bit, Kathy seemed unsure of what exactly the crowd was booing.

"I'm sure Kathy was surprised by the reaction," a friend of Griffin tells me. "She's not sure if it was the fat part or the Palin part of the joke that the troops protested. However, if you think one audience reaction is going to get her to stop telling Palin jokes you are wrong. That family is comedy gold. Even if our men and ladies in uniform don't seen to think so."

@bill: I'm a Republican, and a Christian. I also belong to the San Diego branch of the Tea Party. I don't hate gays and I'm surely not a bigot. We have the largest Navy base in the country here and I'm very proud of our troops. Conservatives see what's wrong with this country and our goal is to fix it. Maybe Democrats should start focusing on their own agenda instead of making fun of others. Or do you guys even have an agenda?

Palin always speaks fondly of the troops and I think that is why they booed her.
Also, I don't think it helps the fact that Kathy Griffin is butt ugly either!! I think a lot of those military men would like to see a pretty face instead of her reconstructed plastic freak show of a woman face. Heeedeeeous....

She used to be funny, but not so much anymore. Tired routines. Is her show still on the air?

We saw her in Ft Lauderdale, and we walked out when she started talking about Palin's underage daughter and sex.

I'm not really into politics (I think they're all crooks), but talking about someone's underage daughter is pretty sick.

My group walked out of her concert and we all went out for drinks.

I also saw her at ft. lauderdale and boooooed her when she started on the republicans. fortunately, i was seated right in front of her and when she tried to dismiss me, i explained that i came to be entertained and wasn't interested in her politics. i got a bit of support but most south floridians are liberals. won't spend any more money going to see these big mouths. liberal or not, how in the world could any American think obama is doing a good job.

KG is a frustrated woman who only attracts gays. She is NOT funny, except to her gay friends. She's disgusting. I can't imagine why she was even playing to the troops.
