PETA Responds Sharply to Sarah Palin's Caribou Killing

Sunday night's episode of 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' featured a pretty graphic scene featuring the former vice presidential candidate shooting and killing a caribou--and several animal rights groups, including PETA, aren't happy too about it.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) vice president Dan Mathews released a statement to Fancast sharing his thoughts.

"Sarah seems to think that resorting to violence and blood and guts may lure people into watching her boring show. But the ratings remain as dead as the poor animals she shoots," the statement said.

Palin, for her part, guessed that the show might make waves and issued several statements of her own on Facebook and Twitter--before the show even aired. "Tonight's hunting episode 'controversial'?" she wrote on her Facebook page Sunday. "Really? Unless you've never worn leather shoes, sat upon a leather couch or eaten a piece of meat, save your condemnation of tonight's episode. I remain proudly intolerant of anti-hunting hypocrisy."

In Sunday's show, Palin defended the act of hunting, saying that it's a common way to collect food for the cold months. "Hunting is something most Alaskans do to fill their freezer with meat for the winter," the former Alaskan governor said.

The controversial scene featured Palin shooting the animal and the caribou dropping to the ground, dead. Later in the episode, the hunters cut up the caribou so they can transfer it back home and save it in the freezer. "When you see that you have a successful hit, it's a great feeling of accomplishment," Palin summarized.

Next week episode of 'Sarah Palin's Alaska' features Kate Gosselin and her eight kids accompanying Palin on a camping trip.

► Did You Know? A caribou is just a North American name for a reindeer. A male caribou will try to look his best during mating season by refusing to eat in order to lose most of his body fat. Males will battle other males for the right to a female to mate with. Males are also ladies' men, posssibly having up to 20 partners.

Get over it "Larry". People have hunted for food since forever. Sarah has always said her family hunted for their meat. So why is this a surprise. The only reason this gets a story, IT'S SARAH PALIN. Besides, PETA is upset about the death of one caribo??? Yeah, this upsets them but unborn humans no problem, it's OK to kill them and do it in the millions. These people got their priorities all screwed up. Bunch of wackos.

PETA won't, and shouldn't "get over it" since speaking up for animals is what they do. They are the best animal rights group out there, and that's what your problem really is. So maybe YOU should get over it.

JerriBlank, I have no problem with anyone speaking up for animals. My problem is PETA claiming to be for animal rights then saying it's OK for unborn humans to die, to be murdered. Do you have a problem with this, Jerri? You should. Do you feel it's OK for unborn humans to be killed, Jerri? As I pointed out humans have hunted for food forever. I don't know what you eat but more people eat meat, than not. I have no problem with Sarah killing one caribou to feed her family but if she went out and slaughter them by hundreds, I would have a big problem with that just like I have a big problem with people who can justify the slaughter of millions of unborn humans. Where is your priority Jerri?

Bill, PETA does NOT have an organizational viewpoint on abortion, pro or con. They are an animal rights group, not a group that deals with that issue. Why would they?! Sarah Palin does not hunt to feed her family. She shoots wolves from helicopters and shoots caribou to make some strange, sick point for a TV show. Do you think she doesn't go to the grocery store? That caribou had a right to it's life too. That's what PETA is saying. Pro-lifers ought to respect that. You can't defend all the actions of one person because they agree with you on one issue that is most dear to you.

I watched the episode and it wasn't graphic, they didn't show the animal suffering, and they are hunting for the family and are going to eat the meat. In Alaska they are living off the land and are not killing just to kill.

I don't think Sarah and her boorish family are "living off the land." They're living off the money all the more foolish people in the US send them, and what they're making from that fake reality show. You'll notice she doesn't appear as if she's ever done any of the things she is shown doing on the show before in "her" Alaska. And PETA, though sometimes a bit extreme and unrealistic, is right to get on her. Shooting wolves--that are NOT a nuisance or a threat to humans--from helicopters is not the way of life for anyone. Sarah Palin's a joke, and those of you who support her have no more of a clue than she as to the constitution or the principles on which this country was founded.
