Thirty years ago, one of the most influential songwriters of all-time, John Lennon, was struck down. The world is vastly different today, but the love and adoration for the former Beatle is still very much alive. Dozens gathered near the Dakota Hotel and the Strawberry fields in Central Park where fans from all over flocked to sing and praise Lennon as the musician and the courageous leader for peace. PopEater walked in to get a feel for the vibe and to ask people what the 30th anniversary meant, and we even got a couple people to sing their favorite Lennon songs to us. There were tears, laughter and plenty of music Wednesday morning, revitalizing the idea that the fans will never stop loving their fallen warrior.Check out the event and interviews after the jump!

John Lennon was a great songwriter as was Paul McCartney and George Harrison. He is overrated as a solo artist! McCartney was the greatest Beatle by far. Ringo Starr was and is a JOKE! The Beatles didn't even need him. Lennon's legacy is linked to the Beatles great success and he played a great part in that. I'm not a Beatles fan. I believe they are overrated a great deal as a group. As songwriters (except for Starr) they are tops! There are groups much better as musical artists than were the Beatles. The Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin, The Supremes, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac are just a few. But, as I stated, as songwriters they are almost unmatched! I'm sure there are many who disagree with me and are probably mad. No offense is intended. Just my opinion.

The Beatles started it all and are hardly over rated. Guess what dude, they're UNDER RATED!! Guess you had to be there to truly appreciate the Beatles. Not your fault, you must be 15 or 16 years old.
Beatles are junk. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber is where it's at today!!. Rap is the KING of music!!!. NWA and Ice -T are better than hippy boy!!
John Lennon is truly an angel in Heaven now. God bless him.

Baby It's You was written by Burt Bacharach and first done by the Shirelles, but this is only to show that not only was John Lennon a great songwriter but a great interpreter of songs as well.

Strange! 30yrs ago on the night Lennon was shot I was driving from Philadelphia, Pennsyl. to Austin, Tx. to visit my college buddy Dave. It was night as I traveled through Virginia on the 'Skyline Drive', I was disappointed because I forgot my box of 8-track tapes for the trip. All of a sudden, I saw a star explode! I didn't know what to make of it. It wasn't an astroid, it seemed to split in a third and then break again. It hung in the sky and the pieces continued to glow like a full moon for the next 40-45 minutes as a continued to head southwest approaching Tennessee. My gut reaction was I witness a star nova. Ok, I hit Kingsport, Tennessee and stopped for gas. I was buying the cashier when I noticed 8 track tapes for sale, remembering again that I forgot to bring mine. I saw Mind Games - "a tribute to John Lennon" and thought how odd. I didn't remember the album being subtitled as such. Aren't tributes usually made after someone dies??? I was tired so pulled into the Holiday Inn, checked in, turned on Monday Night Football to hear Howard announce John had been gunned down. I never heard another thing about the star, nova or of any astronomical events occuring that fateful night, but it was real.
