'Tis the season to be charitable! In a list released this week, talk show host Oprah Winfrey was named the most charitable celebrity after giving away more than $40 million in 2009, PEOPLE reports. Winfrey donated most of the money through the Oprah Winfrey Foundation for causes including education and programs for women and children.
The Giving Back Fund, a national philanthropic group, compiled the list which was specific to 2009.
"There are many generous celebrities, but when you can top a list of celebrity philanthropists three out of four years, as Oprah has, that is saying something," said Marc Pollick, president of The Giving Back Fund.
Novelist Nora Roberts was the second most generous, donating $4.45 million to her organization, the Nora Roberts Foundation. Her foundation supports literacy in underserved communities.

This is no surprise. Oprah is one the most generous celebrities around, and has been for many years. She is going to leave a great hole when she finally ends her show next year. There is no one like her around today.

This is false and misleading. Oprah does not donate her own money. She donates the proceeds from her book club sales after expenses. Not a dime of her personal billion dollar stash leaves her hands.

Oprah donates money that other people give to her foundation, not her own money. She is now worth 2.9 Billion and smiling!!

yes she donates a lot of money but you can bet she wants every one to no it. people who donate with no strings attached never have their name mentioned she only does it for the glory of seeing her name in print.what she does is overshadowed by her self centered personality she is a ego maniac between her and donald trump they are two of a kind. sorry I don't see her as god like she thinks she is.

A good person who likes to help others, wont have their own picture here, with a huge write up about how much she has given to people. Oprah has been helping herself all these years.

its good to see so many skeptics. there may be hope for us yet.
for example, in the case of Gates. yeah they put up billions from their foundation for 'aid' in third world countries....... but when you keep looking.... you hear bill talk about regulating global population through vaccines..... and what do you know, there is melinda vaccinating these people with God knows what.....

Bully for Oprah. However, I don't understand why the liberal Oprah just didn't give her money to the US Government and let them dole it out, or could it be that she doesn't trust the government to do the right thing. Amazine, she belives she actually knows more about spending her money than Uncle Sam.
