Source: Kathy Griffin Increases Security After Bristol Jokes Backfire

Kathy Griffin may have told Chelsea Handler that she stands by her joke referring to Bristol Palin as the "white Precious," but behind the scenes, I'm told the 'My Life On the D-List' star isn't laughing and has privately, and quietly, increased her security following the off-color remarks.

"The Palin family has a unique following of people who either love or hate them," an insider tells me about Bristol, who received death threats during her wildly successful run on 'Dancing With the Stars.' "After the remarks, Kathy is worried about her own security and is taking extra precautions to make sure she is safe."

After threats were made toward Bristol, 'Dancing' executives told Mark Ballas, her dancing partner, to stop defending her on Twitter because it was inciting the haters. Now, insiders tell me Kathy has been advised to do the same.

Still, Griffin has continued to defend her act, pointing out that her detractors, including 'View' co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck, have never gone overseas to entertain the troops. "I've performed in Iraq and Afghanistan and walked to the latrine on gravel with a flash light and stood up in the cafeteria and told jokes," Griffin explained. "And I just think it's ironic that (haters) would call me a bully."

Of the situation, Handler added, "If you take anything any comedian says seriously ... you're stupid and you need to get something else going on."

"Kathy is a very strong woman, but we are worried," a friend of the comedienne tells me. "All it takes is one nut job to do something stupid. Her extra security is just a precaution until all this blows over."

I abhor Griffin and those like her whose humor is derived from the person of others. Palin's supporters are unlikely to hire a hit man to bother with this woman but every political group has its nut job. Many public figures have discovered this over the years.

Kathy had all of that plastic surgery. Why is she picking on Bristol? Bristol looks fine to me. She has a beautiful baby.

Fat jokes are not funny and I am a woman who spent years just trying to get to 100 lbs. No I don't have a eating disorder, just naturally thin. Making fun of an over weight person is just cruel and NOT FUNNY.
