Mariah Carey knows how to use what her mama gave her, a fact made evident during her ABC Christmas Special last night. Carey, who hosted 'Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You' at LA's Orpheum Theater, was joined on stage by her mother Patricia, a vocal coach, whose operatic trills wowed the audience almost as much as the pregnant diva's five-octave range.
The mother-daughter duo performed a modern take on the classic 'O Come All Ye Faithful/Hallelujah Chorus,' earning them a standing ovation from the audience.
The younger Carey's second Christmas album, 'Merry Christmas II You,' hit shelves in early November.

I felt like the entire audience was staged. It seemed phony and over done. Mariah's voice was prerecorded during half of the songs and she should have given her mother more singing time. Also...with all of that money Mariah has, you think she could have Mom's teeth fixed. Poor Mom.

Peach...I could not agree with you more. The whole thing seemed staged and phony. The dancers were distracting, all of Mariah's "fiddling" drove me crazy. She was not in good voice at all except for maybe her last song. It's a shame, really, because she had some amazing musicians playing with her and her choir was really good as well.
I didn't like the bit with the the little girl with the kidney problems, either. Mariah really came across as a Diva and showed no sensitivity. That little girl belonged in the front row, and, when Mariah threw out that teddy bear, it should have been thrown to her! She could have given her a little hug or something! I half expected for Mariah to give her what she asked for for Christmas..I forgot what it was,now...it was some kind of toy.
And Patricia Carey's teeth! Please! I've been working in the dental field for 32 years and my husband is a Dentist. Surely, something should have been done about that! My husband and I have helped our family and we dont have anywhere near what Mariah does! I'm guessing Mrs. Carey's teeth will be repaired real soon, though!
In all, the whole production was poorly done and a waste of time! Oh, where was Andy Williams when we needed him!
I thought I was the only person that noticed the mom's teeth. i expected more the special. maybe because she's expecting twins thT'S the best she could do. Mariah please get your mom's teeth fixed.
Her mom looks 10 years younger than her!! Mariah sure didnt get her "genes"
too bad, there was once a time when Mariah could of been a "big" star

I think Mariahs mother has a far better voice than her daughter.
Mariah screams too much, mom is definitely operatic and easier to listen to.

i agree with Joan. i think Mariah's voice has left the building. it was difficult hearing her sing and even worse watching her face as she tried to sing.

the negativity is so sad, especially this time of year. i thought they were both great.
Ah, the haters, the haters. Nice Christmas show, staged or not, Taped or not. Very enjoyable songs and dacnes. Although I miss Andy Williams, he used to have the best christmas shows ever!

I agree. Wish we could of heard more from Mom. Also, Mariah kept messing w/her ear pieces throughout the entire show, which was really distracting.

a big Amen to that! Mariah is all about wowing people with her vocal calisthenics. I never really feel she's singing from the heart but more from her "Ego". (look what I can do!) gag.
take a couple of shot's of jack, won't stop the vomit, but you will at least start to enjoy the butchered song.
It was a wonderful show, I am glad Mariah did it. She is as great as ever

It was very festive and fun to watch! Her mother added a little something extra, as they planned, I'm sure. Give Mariah a break, she has delivered hit songs for years! Go Mariah...enjoy this next stage of your life!

It's strange that they keep calling this a duet.. its 4 minutes long and her mom sings for like 40 seconds total!

The show was great & she helps a lot of people in the position she is in..
Continued joy & happiness to her & her family.

I'm with you. Why all the criticism, especially during the holiday season? They were both great!
