Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds Confirm Split

Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood's most beautiful and zealously private couples, have decided after "long and careful consideration" to end their two-year marriage, they announced on Tuesday.

After TMZ released a report saying they had separated, the couple quickly issued a joint statement confirming the news and asking for privacy.

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The news has stunned friends.

"No one had any idea this was coming," a friend of Johansson's tells PopEater. "They kept their private life so secret that I doubt we will ever really know what went wrong."

Johansson, 26, began dating Reynolds, 34, in 2007. They tied the knot a year later in an intimate ceremony at a Canadian retreat. They have split time between an apartment in Manhattan and in August, it was reported they purchased a $2.8 million home in Los Angeles.

The incredibly good-looking pair (he was just named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive; she, GQ's Babe of the Year) have closely guarded their privacy since they began dating and rarely speak of each other in interviews. Photographs of them together are few and far between.

That said, the 'Iron Man 2' beauty opened up slightly about married life in an InStyle interview earlier this year.

"You're married and suddenly you have your own family," she said. "There's a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You've got your home in that other person."

Hollywood has seen a spate of celebrity breakups as of late. In the past two months alone, Eva Longoria, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael C. Hall, Christina Aguilera and Courteney Cox have all split from their significant others.

Does it even matter? These Hollywood couples have no concept of what marriage is. Once the honeymoon is over, that's it. They wake up and realize they don't love each other. Now, these two say they went into the marriage with love and they will leave with love. They did not love each other. They have no clue what love is. The warm fuzzies you have for someone is usually not love. It's a part of it but actions speak louder than words.

I don't agree with shacking up with someone before you're married but dang! These people need to try it before they marry because, why bother.

I think the contrary... People who sleep together before they getmarried, and on early dates, do not get to really know if they are in love. They are in luct!! That is why if you wait to shack up, you can be true friends, and get to know each other ...
Chances are the marriage will last!! It has been proven!! Marriages last longer if there is no sex before marriage!!

I agree with you 100%. I'm a 30+ year old virgin so I definitely don't believe in the premarital sex thing because of my devotion to Jesus Christ.

But these people in Hollywood are all about themselves and pleasing themselves. They don't care about the other person. Next thing you know, these people will be on to someone else within the next couple of months.

I like both of these stars. Scarlett has proven that you can grow-up in the industry and be somewhat normal. They don't seem to have alot of negative publicity surrounding them. Sorry to hear the marriage break-up, but it is Hollywood. Hopefully, there won't be any scandals attached to the break-up.

Well, they say that the reason is that "they've considered long and hard on both their PARTS ..." - sounds a little weird to me but to each his own and whatever ... I guess they don't like their parts.

PS An editor or a publicist would help, guys.

... what PARTS I'm not sure but one thing IS sure ... they need an editor before they make a "joint statement" ... hmmmm ... a joint - maybe that's one of the parts they didn't like.
