Scarlett Johansson and Ryan Reynolds Confirm Split

Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson, one of Hollywood's most beautiful and zealously private couples, have decided after "long and careful consideration" to end their two-year marriage, they announced on Tuesday.

After TMZ released a report saying they had separated, the couple quickly issued a joint statement confirming the news and asking for privacy.

"After long and careful consideration on both our parts, we've decided to end our marriage. We entered our relationship with love and it's with love and kindness we leave it. While privacy isn't expected, it's certainly appreciated."

The news has stunned friends.

"No one had any idea this was coming," a friend of Johansson's tells PopEater. "They kept their private life so secret that I doubt we will ever really know what went wrong."

Johansson, 26, began dating Reynolds, 34, in 2007. They tied the knot a year later in an intimate ceremony at a Canadian retreat. They have split time between an apartment in Manhattan and in August, it was reported they purchased a $2.8 million home in Los Angeles.

The incredibly good-looking pair (he was just named PEOPLE's Sexiest Man Alive; she, GQ's Babe of the Year) have closely guarded their privacy since they began dating and rarely speak of each other in interviews. Photographs of them together are few and far between.

That said, the 'Iron Man 2' beauty opened up slightly about married life in an InStyle interview earlier this year.

"You're married and suddenly you have your own family," she said. "There's a nice comfort in that. That part of your life is certain, in a way. You've got your home in that other person."

Hollywood has seen a spate of celebrity breakups as of late. In the past two months alone, Eva Longoria, Elizabeth Hurley, Michael C. Hall, Christina Aguilera and Courteney Cox have all split from their significant others.

too much pretty in one house makes for a bad marraige.
the question aint why are they divorcing, its WHY did they get married? why not just shack up, cuz its always gonna end.

@nee - I agree! Sandra & Ryan would make a great couple. And she is not a cougar, they both looked right for each other in The Proposal. Now that the world has righted itself and SB & Ryan have divorced their mismatched significant others, they should be dating. Sandra & Ryan have been friends for a long time. They have great chemistry, both are hot, down to earth and have seen each other naked lol. Who knows, since they're such private people they're probably seeing each other and we dont even know it ;)

How long and careful could the consideration have been? They've only been married 2 years. What, did it start at the altar? On the flight to the honeymoon? LOL.

Oh how sad. However I am "privy" to their split-up. You see both have
egos the size of the Grand Canyon. And they had an argument.
HE: Finally grew a pair and told her that her attempt at a singing
career was a joke.(did anyone else hear animals howling when she
attempted to sing, and release an album? )He was engaged to Alanis
Morisette prior to her and he knew talent, and Miss Scarlett had none.
She had a fit and retaliated....by.......
SHE: Telling him that People Magazine made a HUGE error, by selecting
him as "sexiest man alive" and wanted their title back. He went
beserk, curled into a ball and cried "I want my mama"

A. Ryan is TOTALLY hotter than Scarlett. Sure, she's cute and I'm envious of her fine-ness but Ryan is by far one of the most attractive and funny hollywood bloaks out there.
B. Does it surprise you, they were a weird couple, almost "brother and sister"ish
C. Who else thinks that entire message was a publicity stunt done to make them and their agents money? They were two hot single people who got married to get some extra dough, attention and as an opportunity to get to bang someone just as attractive and self centered as themselves. I honestly think there was some sort of fame encouraged by the two of them getting married and now they've got it. It might be private to them but it looks pretty obvious to me. Besides who in hollywood follows the "one love" mantra anyway. it's a damn shame. they would have surprised everyone had they actually made a real marriage out it.
