What's Next for John Edwards?

Following Elizabeth Edwards' funeral over the weekend, her estranged husband, John Edwards, is quietly devising a plan on how to prudently return to public life.

"John is a political animal, there can be no doubt about that," a former friend of the politician tells me. "He knows that he self-destructed [with the cheating scandal] but believes that with the right plan, and the power of time, he'll be able to win back the hearts of the public."

Sources tell me that John's plan is to lay low for the next several months. He was last seen leaving his late wife's funeral on Dec. 11 with his two young children, Emma Claire, 12 and Jack, 10, who are both now living with their father. Over the next year John will focus on being a full-time dad raising them both without a mother.

However, don't expect John to disappear from public view for long.

"John is very ambitious and that's something you just can't turn off. If he can prove that he is a loving father and is willing to spend his time, money and fame helping out great causes, than that could help clean up his tarnished image," an insider tells me.

What kind of causes? "Expect him to work hard for disadvantaged children who have lost a parent or volunteer for a cancer charity," my source reveals. "He wants to do something good."

John, I know you will do well and you should get back into public life, America needs you and so do you. Like the writer said you just have to ride the storm, and we Americans can be a mean group of people, but we are a forgiving group. So here's a few pointers: raise your kids with love; never forget to count your blessings for time spent with Elizabeth; don't hide let the public see and hear from you; and don't ever marry your baby's mama!

I'm not defending what John Edwards did by any means, but most things aren't so clear cut. Let's say his wife had been sick for many, many months. The last thing she would want was sex, which is understandable. On the other hand, people have needs and with the stress of an election, his wife's illness and everything else, Edwards probably just cracked. He seemed to love his wife and was there for her, right up until the end. I just think we may be too quick to judge.

Apparently some of the nitwits on this thread can just put it behind them. The man is a scuzzball, he cheated on his wife with a crazy tramp, and then DENIED the child they produced. The worst character in that horrid melodrama wasn't Raelle AKA Lisa Drucker, daughter of a scammer, it was John Edwards, cheater, liar, crumb ball whose ambition led him to believe that the WHITE GUY would prevail over the black guy and the woman, and that America was STILL so racist that they'd dump both Hillary and Obama, and he'd be left to pick up the pieces. That's why he wouldn't leave the race, even with his crazy mistress breathing down his neck.

John Edwards will be ok until he starts to go out in public with the Mistress! The public won't forgive him for the affair while his wife was home suffering from Cancer! No amount of PR can get that image out of my head!!!!

all these women chastising john edwards for having a mistress while his wife was sick is sickening in itself .... when he was with the other woman neither he or elizabeth knew she had cancer or at least when the other woman conceived his baby inside of her they didn't know so why don't you all knock it off and let elizabeth rest in peace and john rest also

I have a difficult time picturing John Edwards winning any public office -- even dogcatcher. The goodwill just isn't there and I don't see it returning. Still, I never say never. Look how many people we've seen disgraced in the public eye do a "mea culpa" and turn it around.
