Conan O'Brien: Sarah Palin Killed Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Conan O'Brien took to his gloriously decked-out holiday set on TBS last night to report some sad news: Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer had been murdered at the hands of hunter Sarah Palin.

"They updated it to make the Rudolph story a little more contemporary," Conan joked as an introduction to a clip. The video showed a harmless scene from the Rudolph TV special, cut with an infamous caribou-killing segment from 'Sarah Palin's Alaska.' See the clip:

Palin's caribou hunting stint on 'Alaska' saw harsh denouncements from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin as well as PETA . Sorkin's screed was particularly barbed: "You weren't killing that animal for food or shelter or even fashion," he wrote. "You were killing it for fun. You enjoy killing animals."

Deadline notes Jimmy Kimmel aired a similar gag about Palin shooting Rudolph ... two weeks ago.

For some reason, these late night TV show hosts, like Conan O'Brien and David Letterman seem to believe their cheap shots at Sarah Palin are actually funny. If only they were to target someone who is a genuine threat to the American way of life, rather than a mere threat to liberal idealism, they might actually be serving a purpose other than occupying air time.
