Illicit text messages from another woman brought down Tiger and Elin Woods, and they apparently brought down Eva Longoria and Tony Parker too. The actress filed for divorce from her husband of three years after reportedly finding hundreds of flirty texts on his phone between him and a close family friend, Erin Barry, the wife of Parker's former San Antonio Spurs teammate Brent Barry. Parker later filed his own divorce papers and denied any physical relationship with his friend's wife. Longoria and Parker were recently spotted having lunch together, fueling buzz about a reconciliation, but sources said they were merely meeting to discuss the terms of their split.

Courteney Cox & David Arquette
One of the most stunning splits of the year was when power couple Courteney Cox and David Arquette announced in October that they'd separated after 11 years of marriage, revealing the split dated back to June. They explained that "the reason for this separation is to better understand ourselves and the qualities we need in a partner and for our marriage." Reports surfaced later that Cox had grown weary of Arquette's juvenile antics and may have even had a thing with 'Cougar Town' costar Brian Van Holt. Five was not a charm for many star couples, and Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy were no exception, announcing the end of their five-year relationship in April over Twitter. The pair had seemed so happy, devoted and grounded -- even launching a crusade against autism together in honor of McCarthy's son, who has the disease -- that the news took many by surprise. It was odd enough that they decided to tell the world about their breakup over Twitter, but things took an even stranger turn when Carrey just didn't seem to be able to stop tweeting crazy stream-of-consciousness messages. "This is no breakdown! It's a breakthrough!" he insisted in one. "And if you'll just loosen these straps, I'll show you the difference!"

Scarlett Johansson & Ryan Reynolds
Only weeks after being named the "Sexiest Man Alive" by People magazine, Ryan Reynolds and Scarlett Johansson announced they were ending their two-year-long marriage. The famously private couple, who rarely spoke of each other publicly and were said to be mum about their relationship even to close friends, blamed the split on busy work schedules and too much time apart. Infidelity rumors had also been looming, with reports that Reynolds had a fling with his 'Green Lantern' costar Blake Lively. Since the pair announced their breakup, details have emerged that Johansson hasn't been happy for months and even went to a therapist to try to work on their problems. Reynolds reportedly didn't want a divorce, but after a two-week trial separation, he agreed that they should part.

They looked gorgeous together for five years, but in April, Halle Berry and model Gabriel Aubry said they were going their separate ways. Hall and wife Jennifer Carpenter made it through several long, grueling months of his cancer treatments, the 'Dexter' costars' marriage crumbled all the same, and they filed for divorce last week. The reps for the actors, who play brother and sister onscreen, said they'd been separated for several months. Shortly after the news broke, rumors swirled that Hall had been unfaithful with Julia Stiles, who has guest-starred as his love interest on the show. Stiles issued a vehement denial that she had anything to do with the relationship's demise.

Bizarrely, they continued to deny their split even as details of a preliminary divorce agreement leaked out. But in November, they signed the papers, making their break official.

In another of the year's shockers, Kate Winslet and husband Sam Mendes said in March that they were ending their seven-year marriage, though the decision had predictably been made months earlier. They gave no reasons for the split, saying only that it was mutual and amicable and they were committed to continuing to raise their son and her daughter together. Later, there were rumblings that their marital woes began when Mendes was directing Winslet in 'Revolutionary Road,' about a couple whose marriage goes awry, and they had difficulties juggling their different approaches to working and living together. But why they broke up, for the most part, remains a mystery.

Months after quietly separating (do you sense a pattern here?), Christina Aguilera and her husband, music producer Jordan Bratman, went public with their split. The couple, married for five years and together for eight, had in recent months become "more like friends than husband and wife," a source told PopEater. They haven't yet filed for divorce but are living apart and plan to "see how that goes," the source said. The pair have a 2-year-old son, Max.

The breakup of seemingly air-tight Al and Tipper Gore after 40 years of marriage was one of the year's biggest stunners. Though the political powerhouse couple, like so many others in the spotlight, had to dodge frequent infidelity rumors -- including one by a masseuse who said she'd had unwanted sexual contact with Al Gore -- Tipper herself scoffed at them, as did many in their inner circle. Close friend and journalist Sally Quinn said they simply "grew apart" because Al was on the road so much and "their interests just diverged."

'High School Musical' sweethearts Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens sent shock waves through Hollywood this month when they revealed they were ending their four-year relationship. Sources said there was "nothing dramatic" about their split and there was "no third party involved." Instead, the relationship simply "ran its course." As recently as two weeks before the breakup, however, the pair were spotted cuddling and kissing in Hawaii.

Though the Tiger Woods sex scandal began over Thanksgiving weekend of 2009, the fallout continued well into this year, as the list of women claiming to be the golf star's mistresses continued to grow for months. Even as Woods and his Swedish model wife, Elin Nordegren, said they were working on rebuilding their marriage and family (they have two young children, Sam and Charlie) and he was getting treatment for his "sex addiction" in rehab, few thought the couple could ever rebound. They were right. The pair filed for divorce in August after five-and-a-half years of marriage.
