Bret Michaels Enjoying Engagement Bliss

After nearly 17 years with Kristi GIbson, musician and reality TV star, Bret Michaels already felt like he was part of a family -- without being married.

Happy and fulfilled with his girlfriend and their two daughters, Raine, 10, and Jorja, 5, marriage seemed like another layer that
wasn't necessary, but that has all changed. Michaels finally asked his on-off girlfriend to marry him during the finale of his VH1 reality show, 'Bret Michaels: Life As I Know It.'

"Kristi is perfect for me because she allows me to live and do the things I love to do," Michaels said. "She has her own life away from me and that is great."

He told PEOPLE that he never thought he would marry. "But when Kristi said, 'I don't need this ring, I don't need the piece of paper, I love you no matter what, she took the pressure off," he said.

The rocker said that by using reverse psychology on him, the scenario worked. He proposed on his TV show earlier this month, realizing that Kristi and the kids are what make him the happiest. He dared himself to take the next step.

"We have had a strong friendship with benefits for a long tie, getting engaged for real just felt right," he said.

However, the couple seem to be enjoying their engagement with no immediate plans to marry.

Gibson has said she would like to keep it casual and small. Maybe marry outdoors on a sunny beach, even a remote tropical island with just close friends and family who would help them celebrate with a rocking party.

Michaels, who had a scary brain hemorrhage and small warning stroke earlier this year, will have surgery in January to repair a hole in his heart. No wedding will take place before that is completed.

"I feel great right now and am so happy to be alive," said Michaels, who will ring in the new year at Universal City Walk in Orlando. "I adore Kristi and will see what happens with the relationship."

I use to like him but have found him to be a total fake.

She told him she didn't care if he was gay and that a marriage of convenience was okay as long as he paid her. She also said she didn't mind if he continued to wear eye makeup, had woman's hair, was only 5'4" tall and dressed like a rodeo clown.

Oh yeah, and wore earrings and used magic marker to color in faux whiskers and 5 O'clock shadow and has a giant bald spot.

This guy is a big nothing. So what if he was in some crappy 80's band that relied on hair and attitude rather than talent. He's really no better than a bobble head. And who cares who he does....he could do the Queen of England and he'd still be a jerk.

I am a Brett Michaels fan, he is a great performer but I also do not agree with the shows he was doing, left a VERY bad taste in my mouth but I dont think he "boinked" Billy Ray's wife and I do think he is sincere about his fiance and I also believe he did the shows for the money, who wouldnt, really? Unless you are already married and he wasnt. His financial future is set, he can do what ever he wants now and kiss off the slimy show for good. I say good for him, I think he had a wake up call and answered the phone!

give me a break...she has all the benefits of having his kids..she lives in Scottsdale (he may or may not at times) and she gets to mooch off his money an enjoy not doing anything...he even has a "house" manger to make sure she does not spend his money...Kristi is not dumb but Bret will never marry her..she is just using him as he is using her..too bad sooooooo sad...she is just a controlled woman who longs for a credit card of her own...there are only so many presents one can receive...she is a user as is he..

I'm tired of seeing this guys womanly face. I remember thinking that these guys were girls, and then thinking that they drag queens, while they were actually making music. I didn't know anybody who took their music seriously then, and can't understand why anybody cares about any of them today. What's next? A New York Dolls revival? I doubt it, they might not have been very talented, but at least they were original, which is more than you can say about Poison.

So it took him was it 2 or 3 reality shows looking for love for him to realize that he didn't to look he had it at home all the time? I don't know who is the bigger idiot him or her for accepting. He publicly slapped her in the face with his moronic reality tv and she is dumb enough to still marry him. I wish them the best because they are going to need it.
