Balance Makes Owl City a Happy Camper

"The wheels are definitely turning," Adam Young tells
Popeater. Although Young, who is better known as
Owl City, the basement wunderkind behind 2009's breakthrough album 'Ocean Eyes,' spent most of 2010 on the road both headlining clubs in North America and Europe and opening stadiums for
John Mayer over the summer, he's not referring to the tour bus. He's speaking metaphorically about his next record.
The 23-year-old post-emo singer-songwriter says he's always ready for when inspiration might strike. "I always have a text file that's open on my computer. Whenever I read a book and come across something, or I'm sitting in a room with somebody and hear two people talking and something sparks my imagination, I write that down and save it. I have a big collection of ideas all sort of jumbled together, all waiting to be sifted through."
The Minnesota native tries to let his songwriting happen naturally, and mostly that works out. "I guess I've never sat down and forced myself to try to come up with something. Part of what I enjoy about it so much is to be free to drop everything when inspiration does strike and dive right in. That's what I love about being at home. That doesn't happen as much on the road. On the road, it's kind of like a family, there's 13 of us. It's a big family," he laughs, adding that he sometimes longs to be alone in his Minnesota basement writing songs. "I do find myself wishing from time to time that I kind of had that time [to myself] where I don't have to be anywhere the next day, or find out where I'm supposed to go, or be on a flight, or find out what the situation is."
But overall, he's thrilled with his role as a working, touring musician. "As long as there's a balance, I'm a happy camper."
